Race to Europe

following story which will be of inter-
ext to all in this district, although it ts
a very old and oft repeated ‘story :—
An almost forgotten page in British
Columbia’s history, a page telling of a
gigantic scheme, boldly’ ‘planned and
energetically. prosecuted, Was reviewed
by: Judge W. F. Howay of New West-
minster before the transportation and
customs bureau of the Board of ‘Trade
on Friday, when he dealt with the Col
lin’s overland telegraph Hne in the late
fifties.

The story had to do with the am-
bitious plan, of Eastern enpitalists to

. run an overland telegraph wire .from

Son Francisco to Europe via British
Columbia, Alaska and Siberia, follow-
ing the failure in 1851 and several
subsequent. years of other companies

lantic. . .

The Collins wire, or what was -in
graph wire, was actually run from San
Franelseo novthward to New Westmin-
ster, and on to Stuart Lake, but the
manimoth undertaking. Was’ abandon:
ed in 1860 when a cable was sticces-
fully laid aeross the bed of the Atlan
tic. ;
