In Nanaimo, a labor can- didate, -Jack “Parker, was one of three aldermen elected, and in Alberni, T. F. Barnett, former CCF MP, won a coun- cil seat. In Fernie, where la- bor contested all three alder- manic vacancies, Mike Nee outstripped his running mates to win a seat. At Kitimat, another labor candidate, Don Stickney, regained the alder- manic seat he lost last year. In a closely contested school board election in North Van- couver District, an independ- ent, Mrs. Dorothy Lynas, re- gained the seat to which she was first elected by acclama- tion in 1955. Two labor candidates were successful in Surrey, E. D. Wood winning a council seat and E. Neumann = running third in a field of five con- testing four school board vacancies. Elsewhere, labor - endorsed candidates won election al- though straight labor candi- dates were unsuccessful. This was the case in New West- minster, where Mrs. Elizabeth Wood was elected with labor’s endorsation as the Royal City’s first woman mayor, and in Burnaby, where Robert Prittie, running as a BCA candidate with labor’s endor- sation, topped the polls for council. Mrs. Lynas, active in PTA and ratepayers’ groups and a member of North Van Dis- trict LPP Club; polled. 2,169 votes compared to 2,132 and 2,123 to her two. nearest rivals. Final results were not known untill 2:30 in» the morning when the heavy. working’ class vote in Lynn Valley tipped the scales.in her favor. Main issue in the campaign was Mrs. Lynas’ fight for in- creased: federal aid to edu- cation. In an open letter sent to electors she promised to continue the fight she. has waged to have the senior gov- ernments provide a_ bigger share of educational costs.
