Over 2,000 delegates from 72 countries will be at the congress— the most important international forum on world peace ever held. _ The youth of many countries in Europe will take part in an inter- national marathon relay—bigger even than the Olympic torch re- lay—which will start from the badly blitzed Scottish town of Clydebank on November 9. and finish December 12 in Vienna. Runners will carry a “torch of peace” all the way. British runners will proceed to the south coast where French ath- letes will be ready to carry on. Surely no other city preparing to stage such a big event has ever betn cursed with such a collection of dough-headed do-nothings. For sheer incompetence, the Non-Partisan politicians who run the Cambie Street gashouse are in a class by themselves, Any ordinary joker with all his marbles could tell the NPA aldermen and the BEG bigwigs that the sensible place to locate the stadium is at the Pacific National Exhibition. where the structure could become permanent and help to lift the PNE into the big time. And the only logical location for the swimming pool is also in the neglected East End, where the kids haven’t got a pool at present. Actual site can be worked out by the various community organizations in amicable fashion, but the general location is so obvious that even our lame-brain aldermen should have discovered it on the map. The way things are going now, we'll be lucky to have a stadium and, pool built by 1954. Perhaps the best way to get some quick action is to unite at the polls December 10 and throw out the NPA gang. ‘Any change in faces at city hall could only be for the better. * * * ANOTHER READER writes to take me to task for comparing Rocky Marciano with such ring greats as Louis and Jack Dempsey. He leans to the idea that Dempsey was the greatest heavyweight battler of all times. “The Manassa Mauler could take Louis for breakfast and finish off Marciano for lunch.” is the way he puts it. “He never fought ‘such a ‘bunch of stumblebums as Marciano has had tossed in front of him.” || Kearns was ‘carefully steering him towards a title shot. eae eae MARCIANO AND DEMPSEY Whoa, there, Buster. I was around in Dempsey’s day, and I can remember plenty of tankers who took the big dive for Jack when Just look over the list of “one round knockouts” scored by Dempsey in 1917 and 1918 and see if you can find the names of any fighters who ever amounted to much. : / After winning from Willard in 1919, Dempsey beat old Billy Miske, who was suffering from Bright’s disease; Bill Brennan, a good trial horse; Georges Carpentier, a lightheavyweight from France; Tommy Gibbons, a fine fighter; and Luis. Angel Firpo, the Wild Bull of the Pampas. Them he lost twice to Gene Tunney and hung up his glovés. Whether Dempsey could have beaten Louis or Marciano is’ a question that will never be answered. At his best he probably would have slaughtered Rocky as he is today, but remember, the Brockton belter is still improving. Nobody knows yet how good Marciano will be in another couple of years. , ‘ee 2 * TWO FELLOWS write me and want to know what kind of a crystal ball I keep around the Pacific Tribune office. “When you ‘picked Chicago Black Hawks to finish third in the NHL race we figured you were slightly touched in the head,” they begin. “Well, the Hawks are now leading the league after a month of competition. and we doff our sombreros to bow solemnly three times in your direction.” : i To be truthful, fellows, I’m just as surprised as you are. And the Hawks’ coach, who picked his boys to finish fourth must be more bewildered than any of us. Don’t expect Chicago to stay out front for long, though. Detroit Red Wings carry too much power to remain behind the Hawks indefinitely. Abel’s Windy City boys will do marvellously well if they end the season no worse than third in the NHL. = PACIFIC TRIBUNE — NOVEMBER 7, 1952 — PAGE 7
