Gov’t may ditch lava bed park It’s one of dozens on a list flagged for possible offloading NISGA’A MEMORIAL Lava Bed Park is one of dozens of parks province- wide that a leaked docu- ment shows may be either privatized or turned over ta other governments, an en- vironmental group says. The Valhalla Wilder- ness Society released the document that identifies 151 parks that could be tumed over to private sec- tor operators, and dozens more that could be either closed or transferred ta other levels of government. “ Society chair Anne Sherrod says it lists Nisga’a Memorial among these that are listed for po- tential transfer to other agencies or governments. “This confirms a fairly extensive onslaught of pri- vatization,” Sherrod said of the document. “This is the progressive invasion of private profit making into the park system.” The lava bed park is presently co-managed by B.C. Parks and the Nisga’a Lisims Government. Lisims government lands and resources direc- tor Collier Azak said he’s talked to B.C. Parks affi- cials and been assured any hand off of the Nisga’a Memorial Lava Bed Park would most likely be to the Nisga’a government, father than some other operator, “Because of the unique situation we're in with the treaty they would focus on us rather than open it up to other private interests,” Azak said. Sherrod said there’s al- ready been gradual privati- zation of the parks system. But she says new plans go far beyond the private contractors increasingly being used to run small roadside campgrounds. Alsa on the list are major northern B.C, parks such as Mount Robson and Bowron Lakes provincial parks, she said. “These parks are literal icons of the B.C. parks system,” she said. Water, land and air pro- tection minister Jayce Murray last week said the document ~ which she said is an internal backgrounder - has been “misconstrued.” She also indicated some parks set for transfer may go into either the fe- CITY OF TERRACE 2002 PROPERTY TAXES — Property Tax Notices have been mailed and are due July 2, 2002 prior to 4:30 p.m, Payments cin be mide at City Hall. 3215 Eby Street, Terrace, B.C. between 8:30 a.m. & 4:30 pan, Monday to Friday by using Interac, cash or cheque. Officials with the North Coast Land and Resource Management Plan will hold an open house at the Skee- na Mall in the afterncon of June 22. They want locals to tell them about their favourite hiking trails, fishing spots, beaches and other recreation- al areas in the plan area. The area to be covered by the new land-use plan in- cludes the bottom end of the Skeena Valley, from the. Khyex River to Prince Rupert, It also takes in coastal areas near Stewart, Work Channel, and more remote parts of the Douglas Channel and other coastal fjords, Planning officer Bill Adair said the table of area and. agency representatives has been told to have the north coast plan finished by December 2003. That’s much faster than the Kalum plan, which took 10 years.
