Garden contest starts soon I THOUGHT I'D give everyone a littl news update from the Ter- race Beautification Society this week, We're well into another busy season and I'm pleased to see the renewed interest and an increas- ing membership, ; The Beautification Society is presently developing both short and Tong term projects as part of a five year plan for the Terrace area. Our society started the year planning the 10th annual Gar- bathon. Thanks to everyone who helped make it such a great suc- CeES. Also we are pleased with the results of the judging for the cleanest school year. Our judges — Vesta Douglas, freeman of the city, Roger Leclerc, school board representative, and society mem- ber Conrad Ganzenberg chose Thoruhill Primary School as this year’s ‘winner. The two renner-ups were also primary schools, What happened to those energetic teenagers in the higher grades? ’ Most recently the Beautification Society planted the flower tubs downtown these last few weeks, Everyone will be able to enjoy a colourful display of red geraniums, marigolds, Dusty Mil- ler and trailing Lobelias this sum- mer. In addition, Otto Grundmann helped plant a beautiful Black Walnut tree inside the Terrace Areni garden, in the memory of Rick and Paul King. Later this fall we will:bave a special dedica- tion, and the society will place a plaque on the tree, Speaking of plaques the society also will replace all the broken plaques on the flowering tubs downlown. Thank you to Don and Irene Ritchie of Hilti Tools for their help in this matter. As I said earlier, the society de- velops long term plans as well. One of our most exciting projects is the development of a linear park alongside Highway 16 West. This proposed park would run from the Sande overpass west to Kenny and down to Frank Street, between the highway and the CNR tacks. A walking path would rin along the entire length, That area has already been im- proved thanks to a litter pickup by Northern Metworking and their workers, Keep up the good work. The Terrace clean up crew have also taken on extra litter or gar- bage pick up in some unsightly empty lots, such ss the corner of N. Kalum and Scott, the corner of N, Kalum and Leen Ave., the empty lot beside Gus’ pool hall, behind the Al Marlin building and behind the Skcena Hotel. If any of the owners of these lots would like to make a small donation for these cleanups, send it to the workers at Northern Networking. Phone Michelle at 635-4479, If others around town cleaned up at least once a year, these empty lots and other areas, they would not only look better, they would be safer for the children. The Terrace Beautification Society’s next project is the con- test to choose the mast beautiful garden in town. And this year the Terrace Real Estate Board joins us on this project, beaded by Al- lison Johansen and Howard and Judy Chafin.
