One of seven zones in the B.C,fYukon, the Northwest Zone was chosen to host 250 to 300 delegates from B.C. and the Yukon. Twenty-five educational sessions _. This first game of the year for both the Northmen and the visiting Prince George Nats turned into a 24-3 route for the Northies. Scheduled regular league play gets underway in two weeks time. Flaherty cleans up on badminton courts Mark Flaherty returned home to Terrace from his job in Prince George to once again prove he’s the best young male badminton player in the Northwest. He did it at the annual Terrace Badminton Club championships on April 14 weekend at Thorn- hill Junior Secondary School. He won everything available to him in ‘A’ class competition. He downed Surrinder Dhaliwell in the men’s singles final, team- ed up with Stewart Keinstra of Prince George to beat Dhaliwell and Tony Broman in the men’s doubles, and then partnered. with wife Judy to defeat Dan Tuomi and Fran Mann in the mixed doubles, Other ‘A’ flight winners in- cluded Nancy Condon over Fran Mann for ladies’ singles, and Judy Flaherty and Fran Mann over Diane Cey and Nancy Con- don in ladies’ doubles. : In ‘B’ flight action, Andrew Blix of Kitimat won the men’s. singles, while Sandra Burnett of Prince George took the ladies’ singles, © The Saturday-Sunday tourna- ment attracted 42 players. Kitimat players get ‘Best-Ever’ berths Masters’ national bowling for Alway Terrace bowler Lesley Al- way was on the winning B.C. championship five-pin team last year in national play, and she hopes to add to her trophy collection in Winni- peg starting June 29. Alway was one of 10 B.C. qualifiers (along with another Terrace bowler — Cathy Wiebe) to represent B.C, at the Masters Teaching Division national champion- ships, The ladies earned places on the team during recent playoff action. Two of the eight Northwest second-year Bantams won places on the B.C. ‘North’ hockey team at trials in Prince George on April 13 weekend. It’s part of the BCAHA’s ‘‘best-ever’’ under-17 summer program. Ryan Bennato and Kyle Gurgen, both of Kitimat, were selected to the 20-player roster following the camp’s comple- tion. The tearm held one workout at Prince George before heading back home. The six-team tour- nament takes. place at Osoyoos starting tomorrow. Enroute to Osoyoos they planned to stop at Vernon for three practice sessions. Coach Fred Schooley of Kitimat told us that Terrace goalie Curtis Bretherick came very close to earning a spot on this under-17 team.
