My r Arthritis is ‘‘inflamation of.a joint’’, There are more than one hundred different’types of ar- thritis.; Some are serious and - some are not. The degrees of disability vary. widely, as do methods of- treatment. It is recommended that those with recurring symptoms should seek early diagnosis — before there is damage to a joint. Symptoms are: pain, stiffness, tenderness or swelling in one or more joints or in the neck, lower. back ‘or knees. . The Arthritis Society, B.C. and Yukon Division, has a Con-_ trol Program that seems to be very well organized. There is an Arthritis Management team con- sisting of specialists, orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, “CLAS social workers and nurses. Working in consultation, «this team ensufes that all arthritis pa-_ tients benefit from a program tailored to ‘their individual needs. - me Mary McGowan of Terrace was born with arthritis. It was classified as rheumatoid (a ‘defect in the ability of the body to defend itself). There wasn’t much that anyone could do about it, Oe, McGowan remembers that when she was a little girl her mother spent hours rubbing her limbs. ‘In my case there seemed to be a hereditary ‘factor,’ she said. ‘“‘“My father, mother, brother and uncle had it.”’ ‘The. pain makes you tired “Arthritis - Terrace Review — Wednesday, September 21, 1988 19 ~ Door-to-door campaign all month for arthritis There is a travelling service to a number of communities with- out a hospital or specialized facilities, and an intensive * Children’s Program.
