Lec ted Ertl A lively election is anticipa- ted in Local 1-424 IWA Prince e following the nomin- ation of officers at the Local’s 28th Annual Meeting April 14- 15, in the Simon Fraser Hotel. Two officers, Second Vice- President Gus Angoldt and Re- cording Secretary Blanche Miller. were re-elected by acclamation. Nominated for office were: President — Don Muirhead and Bob Birchette. First Vice- President — Noel Gooding and Gerry Wolfram. Third Vice- President — Larry Docken- dorff and Butch Steward. Fin- ancial Secretary — Toby Mo- gensen and Ralph Bouvette. Conductor — Stan Ball and Ron Stewart. Warden — Tom Bray and Vince Spendlow. Paul Demonkos was elected Six-Year Trustee by acclama- tion. Keynote speaker at the two- day meet was Regional First Vice-President Jack Munro who gave a short address on the progress made by the Union in bettering the wages and working conditions of the Prairie members. He stated that the contracts negotiated by the Union on the Prairies had brought the wage rates of the members almost into line with the rates paid in the B.C. forest industry. Other speakers brought fraternal greetings from their local unions and included Local 1-417 President Sonny Alexan- der, Local 1-357 President Gerry Stoney, Local 1-80 Financial Secretary Ed Lin- der, Local 1-367 Regional Executive Board member Joe Fowler, and International Assistant Director of Organi- zation Bob Schlosser. Included among the reports was one from the Committee set up to look after the details of the Local’s proposed new three story building. The Committee stated that in line with instructions an architect had been hired to draft the building plans. The Committee also reported that the union was now in a financial position to apply for a mortgage. The building’ is expected to cost approximately $500,000 which will be paid off by renting two of the floors to long-term tenants. The majority of the 32 reso- lutions dealt with by the meet- ing concerned local area pro- blems. Highways Minister Robert Strachan’s ears would have been burning if he had been in attendance and listened to some of the choice remarks made about his roads. The officers in their Report stated that the membership had increased slightly over last year and the Local’s finances were in a sound position. Other sections of the Report noted it had been a bad year for organization and safety but improvement was expected in both these fields. The Report also dealt with such subjects as education, UIC and arbitra- tion cases, and concluded by expressing thanks to the var- ious committees who aided the officers throughout the year.
