Fed conference on sexual harassment the first in Canada By SUSAN RADOSEVIC “This is an inward-looking con- ference designed to open up discus- sion and examine solutions to a very difficult problem,”’ Jim Kin- naird, president-of the B.C. Federation of Labor told delegates to aconference on ‘‘Sexual Harass- ment on the Job’’ last weekend in Vancouver. The conference, co-sponsored by the B.C. Federation of Labor and the Canadian Labor Congress Labor Education Studies, was the first of its kind in Canada and brought together about 150 delegates, mainly women, from af- filiated unions. Panels, workshops and open discussion focused attention on the wide-spread problem’ faced by many working women, unwanted sexual suggestions, comments and actions. One speaker noted that women subjected to sexual harassment fac- ed ‘‘all the tensions and emotions of a rape trial.’’ Emphasis was placed on the right of all workers to maintain aoe personal dignity while on the job. One of the problems of the con- ference was the breadth of the definition of sexual harassment. Minor forms of harassment can be handled by women themselves and many delegates spoke of the need for education and skill-developing course such as assertiveness train- ing. Union locals were also called upon to protect their members with contract language around the ques- tion, Maureen Headley, B.C. Government Employees Union spokesperson said that the BCGEU was developing such a clause for their next set of collective bargaining. The B.C. Federation of Labor and the CLC were urged to develop a large scale publicity campaign to raise worker’s awareness of the problem. — Speakers from the B.C. Human Rights Commission and the Cana- dian Human Rights Branch outlin- ed how extreme forms of sexual harassment could be dealt with by these agencies, but emphasized that unions should attempt to resolve the problems before initiating legal action.
