rying to reverse history | Rightists step up racism _ , By JOHN WEIR ' This is a time when the hate- Mongers are again in full cry. Faced with the strides being Made toward peaceful coexist- €nce of the countries with dif- ferent social systems, which ly view as a fate worse than death, they are straining every fort to halt and if possible turn back the march of history. In all the actions designed to pre- vent normal relations between Canada and the USSR during the past years the beef has usually been supplied by Uk- rainian nationalists, the Jewish Defense League and similar out- fits. They would never have gone to the lengths they did if they did not count on at least the benign “neutrality” of the authorities and favorable pub- licity via the media. Defend Agreement Our government has signed an important agreement on friendly’ exchanges with the Soviet Union. The Canadian people welcome the steps to de- tente in Europe, the Brezhnev- Nixon talks. Are we not duty bound then to defend that pol- icy, to protest the actions of those who would deny and _re- verse it? Can we permit obscene racist, hatemongering ‘Signs to ‘“decor- ate’ billboards along our streets? Is it a democratic right to smash bookstores and insti- tutions, to. chalk up “Kill Com- munists!” and, lest anyone doubt the origin of that kind of think- ing, “Juden raus!’’? The latest venture along this line is the calling of a World Congress of “Free” Ukrainians to be held in Toronto at the be- ginning of November. This is a gathering to fight the Ukrain- ians in their homeland, the Soviet Ukraine, with whom Can- ada sits in the United Nations and has ties of friendship through the Canada - USSR Agreement. Terrorist Acts Who are the “free” Ukrain- ians as they call themselves? They are those that ran away with the retreating Hitler ar- mies and were finally brought over here to comfort them and let them help fuel up the “cold Soviet public replies lo attacks by Sakharov Be scow (APN) —The first ag Of the Soviet public to iow ican Sakharov’s _ inter- as Western newsmen was ingi cy This developed into the pition as people realized Chance ments in ine inter- Telations? Perhaps there is too great a gap between the level of training of the scientist who knows the mysteries of the structure of the atom and the people growing grain or making steel? The level of education is not the same and yet, in this case it is not important, because we are not dealing with mole- cular theory or the design of a neutron accelerator, but with questions everyone understands. Academician Sakharov actu- ally comes out against interna- tional detente. He “warns” that the normalization of relations between the USSR and a num- ber of Western states reached in recent years can be used, ac- cording to him, by Soviet lead- ers to dictate their terms to the world. The Soviet people de- scribe this as slander and false- hood, They completely under- stand the nature of their social system and its. devotion to peace. The Decree on Peace was the first document adopted by the Soviet state in October 1917 and since then the struggle for peace has been the main con- sideration of the Soviet state and its citizens. war.” Today the central bodies of Ukrainian nationalists in both Canada and the U.S. have been taken over by the Bandera faction, notorious for its terror- ist activities against the Ukrain- ian people. They’re “free”! The have the gall to call a “world congress” (no less!) in Toronte. They expect a lot of publicity. They'll be wanting some message from the mayor, Ontario Premier Davis, maybe John Diefenbaker or even Stan- field from the Tories, a Liberal cabinet minister to speak at their banquet ... Those pretensions and ambi- tions don’t amaze anybody any more. But what is amazing is that persons in authority, poli- ticians and press lords, will take them to their bosom and coddle them and wipe the blood from their hands... As they will unless masses of Canadians say, “Enough! Let’s not have any more hypocrisy and doubledealing! No return. to the cold war! We’re marching forward, not back!” These photos were taken on Sept. 13 on King St. in Toronto. PHOTOS—EDYA’ WEIR Efforts of the disguised Greek dictatorship to deceive the Greek people and the world with its partial amnesty and the promise of a return to a non-military re- gime, will not be successful, states the Communist Party. of Greece (KKE) in a statement Aug. 23 by its Political Bureau. “The new manoeuvre, which Papadopoulos and his masters had to carry out,” aims at such receptidn, says the KKE. The regime wishes to “reassure their NATO allies, and perpetuate the power of the American- manipu- lated military men, in the condi- tions of the new international climate of lessening tension. “The junta’s regime changes in form but not in substance,” the statement says. “It remains a brutal, anti-popular dictatorship, an instrument of home and foreign monopolies for the plun- der and exploitation of the people, manipulated by Ameri- can imperialism.” Victory for People The KKE welcomed the release of those political prisoners who were freed, as “a big victory for the Greek people. It is the re- - sult,” said the statement, “of their unity and struggle which have been demonstrated more strongly recently. “The Communist Party of Greece,” it said, “together with all other patriots, warmly greets all freed strugglers for democ- racy and their families. Their un- yielding stand expressed the broad spirit of democratic unity and resistance of the people.” The KKE expressed gratitude “to all those abroad who stood and still stand by the struggle of our people for a democratic Greece. The anti-dictatorship struggle of our people, enjoying international support, presages the complete victory of freedom over neo-fascism,” the statement said. Still In Prison “The fact alone that commu- nists and other patriotic strug- glers still remain in prison, such as Gregoris Farakos, member of the Political Bureau of the Cen- tral Committee of the Commu- nist Party of Greece, Eleni Voul- gari, the only woman political prisoner, and others serving up to 20 years imprisonment, and The Junta remains a brutal, anti-popular regime serving home and foreign monopolies. Communists and other patriots remain in prisons while thousands of others continue to live in exile. that thousands of forced expatri- ates deprived of Greek national- ity, are excluded from the am- nesty, while torturers of the Greek people are protected by law, exposes the dangers of the dictator-president’s slogans __ of ‘forgetting the past’ and ‘na- tional unity.’ “The absolute powers of Dic- tator Papadopoulos, the fascist- type ‘constitutional court’ under preparation and the whole net- work of fascist institutions and alleged parliarhentary democ- racy, define the unchanged arbi- trary character of the regime...” the KKE points out. People’s Demands “The working class and the whole people,” it says, “are call- ed upon to demand wtih greater drive and in unity: —immediate release -of all the remaining political prisoners —abolition of laws 509, 375 and all other special laws and measures —abolition of the junta con- stitution —annulment of decisions de- priving people of their na- tionality for political reasons —the granting freely of the right of repatriation to all those abroad without excep- tion —full freedom of action for all democratic parties, trade unions and other organiza- tions of the people without exception and freedom of the press. “The Greek people will con- tinue even more stubbornly to struggle for the abolition of the dictatorship and the full restora- tion of popular sovereignty.” The KKE urges “unity of ac- tion, organization of the forces of the working class and the whole people and the lining up together and joint struggle of all forces opposed to the dictator- ship. The communists, rallying together and developing their forces, will stand in the front ranks raising the people’s strug- gles for the overthrow of the junta, to secure popular sover- eignty and for a new democ- Tracy.” PACIFIC TRIBUNE—FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 1973—-PAGE 9
