SHERMEN Ani yeoman Le nM f (Maritime Labour Centre) TELEPHONE: 255-1336 TELEX: 04-54624 BENEFIT FUNDS: 255-8771 December 2, 1987 DEC 14 1987 The Municipal Clerk Dear Sir/Madam: We, the United Fishermen and Allied Workers’ Union, wish to make a presen- tation to your city council at your scheduled December 14th meeting. We would like to address the recent panel ruling of the General Agreement on Tariff and Trade (GATT), which charges Canada with unfair processing practices on raw herrinc, sockeye and pink salmon. [It is our opinion, as well as the opinion of many others including the pro- cessing sector, that this would result in the loss of thousands of fish pro- cessing jobs and could set a precedent for challenges to other industries in B.C. that currently have processing or manufacturing restrictions protecting secondary manufacturing jobs in B.C. (i.e. forestry, mining, etc.). We hope to gain the support of council in opposition to this ruling as there are many resi- dents in your community who would be directly affected. A member of our union will be assigned to make the presentation. We anxiously await your reply. Please write to me care of the above address or you can reach me at the above phone number or my home phone - 594-4210. Sincerely, John Malm, \ Smal Boat Vice-President /pf oteu-15
