16 0 Terrace Review — Thursday, January 2, 1992 Big curling dollars hauled: in by Alberta clubs — The December 14th weekend Curling Classic at Smithers offered $63,500 in prize money, - making it one of the richest events in Canada. However, organizers failed to attract a complete slate of highly competitive teams to the four-day cashspiel. Not only that, all the big prize money went to Alberta entries, = including the top four piles of cash. Only 11 teams from this area ‘Signed up to play, and none got into the major prizes, They had eight rinks from the hometown, two from Terrace and one from Prince Rupert. * Edmonton’ 8 Brad Hannah. went home with his pockets full. He finished first to win $23,000. Hannah beat Michael Vavrick of ‘Grande Prairie 6-5 in the final. The runnerup spot was worth $14,400 to Vavrick. In the semi-finals, Vavrick defeated former two-time Saskat- chewan champion Eugene Hritzuk 5-4 while Hannah downed Gerry Kent.of Cranbrook 6-5. Hritzuk and Kent each picked up $5,000 for their efforts. Although the initial spiel was four teams short for the inaugural event, they’re hoping for a com- plete roster next year for the sec- ond annual event. They also plan to boost the total prize money’ to’ $80,000 and perhaps hold it a week earlier in December. The spectator gallery was ‘packed each day with patrons coughing up $5 a day: admission, or $15 for the entire series, Terrace Men’s Recreational Hockey League.
