GASSED FOR DEMOCRACY Keid Bache, who enlisted in Wilson's war for democracy, sut- fers two disablements — he was gassed at the front during the war and now he is kicked from behind after the elections. Bache was onc of the first volunteers in the war to end war and was twice gassed in the front line trenches. He has been work- ing at the Washington State Hos- pital for two years but he took democracy too seriously. A Demo- crat, Bache supported LaFollette. After the Republican landslide he was fired. “You can’t expect a LaFollette man to hold a job under a Republican administra- tion,” his foreman told him. “I offered my life for America,” Bache declared with tears in his eyes, “And I’ve always been to proud of America. But I’m - wondering if it was worthwhile.” Worker, December 6, 1924 25 years ago... OUR BOATS SCUTTLED HALIFAX — “A callous and cynical blow at thousands of deep ‘sea sailors and shipyard: workers in Maritimes, Quebec and on\ the Pacific coast”, was LPP leader Tim Buck’s description of the recommendation by Canada’s maritime commission that the Canadian merchant marine be scuttled, except for a nucleus “for war purposes.” “As if to throw. this’ scuttling into relief as a new result of. the cold war,” he continued, “the new West German government an- nounced the same day that it was entering the world shipping mar- ket with its own merchant marine and as a builder of ships. “The Canadian merchant mari- ne is being sacrificed to the cold war policy of the government, while a.new West German marine with Nazi magnates in control of it, is being encouraged by St. Laurent government policy,” Tim Buck charged. “This is a travesty of all that Canadian fought for in World War Two, and means unemploy- ~ ment for Canadian workers.” Tribune, Dec: 5, 1949 Profiteer of the week: West Coast edition, Canadi ,Pacitic Tribune With inflation racing the way it is, no one, of course, will complain about a little $4,000,000 increase ‘in profits for Canadian Gas and Oil Ltd., Calgary. Mind you, it didn’t do badly in the first nine months of last year — 6,709,000 after taxes. But from Jan. to Sept. this year, the company salted away $10,573,000. That’s after wages, exe- cutive wages, taxes and all other expenses. Trib Editor — MAURICE RUSH Published weekly at Ford Bldg., Mezzanine No. 3, 193 E. Hastings St., Vancouver 4, B.C.
