COMMENT

Threat issued by monopoly
calls for labor fight-back

Hundreds of thousands of Canadians
saw the full-page newspaper ad from
Imasco, a food and tobacco monopoly
(which made a tax-free profit of
$34,564,000 in the year ended March 31,
1976).

Imasco president, Paul Pare, pro-
tested that federal government “anti-in-

flation measures” were going to hurt

profits and big business incentives as
well. Monopolists, it is noticed, need a lot
of incentive to keep them loyal, com-
pared with workers on poverty-level
wages.

Imasco was joined by wealthy Domin-
ion Securities Corp. Harris and Partners
Ltd. which circulated a brochure of simi-
lar complaints in which it also attacks
Canada’s modest efforts at indepen-
dence from the USA.

These monopoly statements are a
stern warning to workers that monopoly,
which pulls the strings of government,
intends to pull them tighter in the
crack-down on wages, aggravating un-
employment to keep profits soaring.
What is it but a blatant threat to
blackmail Canada when Imasco states
that “profit controls . . . sway the balance
of investment risk in favor of the U.S.,
where the returns. . . are restrained only
by the discipline of the market place?”
Investment in Canada “will be_post-
poned,” the ad threatens. Because there
will be “no incentive”, that is no freedom
to strip the economy bare, “unemploy-
ment will rise because companies will
have fewer dollars to invest.”

Imasco also spreads the hogwash that
“labor” has been “keeping pace with the
rate of inflation,” and getting “benefit
from increases in productivity.”

The challenge is clear. Not only is the
monopoly clique prepared to wreck the.
economy for its profits, a part of that
wreckage is to be the living standards of
workers’ families. :

There is more than a hint that the gov-
ernment had better shift to the right or
face monopoly’s wrath.

The serious warning for labor cannot
be overlooked. The response needed is
the upholding of the mandate given at
the Canadian Labor Congress Conven-
tion for an all-out fight against the
wage-cutting Anti-Inflation Board,
which has been used consistently as a big
business weapon against the workers.
The challenge demands an intensified
fight for genuine controls on prices and
profits.

Stepped up preparations for the gen-
eral strike to counter monopoly’s and the
government's war on labor is shown cor-
rect, timely and absolutely necessary to
defend the rights of working people.
The CLC and Communist Party pro-
grams to fight the crisis need to be
pressed for. ;

The role of the working class as the
real defender of the interests of Canada
is now amplified by monopoly’s and the
multi-nationals’ plan for more un-
employment, wage-slashing, attacks on
living standards, and the sell-out of
Canada for the sake of profits.

Calls for strengthened worker unity
have never carried more validity. The
fight-back against monopoly and its gov-
ernments, and the forging of an anti-
monopoly coalition of all democratic
forces are needed to defeat monopoly’s
reactionary. get-tough plan.

Whose politics at Olympics?

Canada’s policy on Taiwan’s Olympic
athletes — that they may represent Tai-

wan, but not pretend to represent China

— has come in for vicious media attacks
both in Canada and outside.

The Canadian Government’s stand co-
incides with reality and with Canadian
foreign policy, a fact that fails to deter
the so-called “international press” —

The Wall Street Journal, New York

Times, London Daily Mail and a few
more — from lambasting Canada.

Even the big business Toronto Globe
and Mail admits “the claim of the regime
on Taiwan to be the rightful government
of China is nonsense.” The G and M
excuses itself by defending the Interna-
tional Olympic Committee’s mouldy
“terms of admissibility.”

What is. really behind the New York
Times bombast which seems to be trying
for an Oscar? (It says “the games have

. now been totally corrupted by politiciza-

tion that reduces this international
sports contest to a mockery of the Olym-
pic ideal and a mere sideshow of the
ideological wars.”)

What mouthpiece of U.S. imperialism

can talk of “corruption” elsewhere, or of
a “sideshow” atmosphere?

The interference in the Games by U.S.
President Ford and the U.S. team’s
threat to walk out, is more exactly a
struggle for U.S. hegemony in foreign
policy over its NATO “partners”. Is the
U.S. industrial-military complex still
rankled over Canada’s relations with
Cuba, Venezuela — and China — and
over the faint glimmerings of indepen-
dence the Trudeau government has
been compelled to allow, such as the
tapering off of Canadian oil to satisfy the
insatiable appetite of the USA?

Never mind about phony accusations
against Canada, which warned the IOC
long ago of its policy toward China and
Taiwan. What disedeen the Games is the
effort of the USA and its political ap-
prentices to interfere in Canadian
foreign policy.

What really denigrates the spirit of the
Olympics and runs counter to its funda-
mental ideals of friendship and peaceful
co-existence is the effort to turn back the
clock and preserve the musty bastions of
imperialism.
