TE Support the Communist candidates on June 25 ROBIN SMITH, Vancouver South. Twenty-three yeer eld Miss Smith is en office wesher and tehes an active part in Vanceuver's youth movement. She knows the needs of the yeung generation and fights fer them. Hers is G streng veice for the future of our land. Trudeau’s Vietnam stand phoney, says Robin Smith “Vietnam is what first gives Trudeau away,”’ says Robin Smith, 23 year-old Communist candidate in Vancouver South. “‘When the Kids find out his position on the war, they know he’s a phoney.” Miss Smith says that his position is bad, and getting worse. ‘‘Before the election was called, he at least told us he stood for a halt to U.S. bombing of the North. Now he refuses to confirm even that limited position.”’ She added, ‘‘Trudeau Says that the American aggressors have a moral responsibility to Stay in Vietnam, while every young person I have talked to knows that they have a moral responsibility to get out.” The young Communist Party Standard-tearer concedes that it is pretty hard for people to find out where Trudeaw stands on issues, and that “the Liberals are deliberately burying a very reactionary policy beneath the Swinging Trudeau cult. That is what’s so dangerous, and what we Communists are fighting.’’ However, she Pointed out the increasing number of the new generation who have seen through the hip facade, and who are opposing Trudeau on issues. “When Trudeau came to Vancouver, there were even members of the Simon Fraser University Liberal Club picketing him on Vietnam. I think this is demonstrative of the breadth of youth opposition to the Liberals’ policy of suport for the U.S., and that Opposition is growing,”’ she said. Miss Smith speaks from experience. She was a leader of the Youth Committee to Aid Vietnam, the Toronto project that went door-to- door for medical aid, and sat on the Co-ordinating Committee to End the War in Vietnam. Since moving to Vancouver, she has been active in the movement against the war, and has seen the large numbers of young people move into their first political activity on the Vietnam issue. When asked about the stands of other parties, she said “The Conservative position deserves special scorn. Leading Tory spokesmen like Fulton have taken up Martin’s discredited “quiet diplomacy’ line. His statement that the best thing we can do is keep quiet, really means that the Tories ~ want Canada to remain a silent partner in the murder of Vietnamese.” “Tommy Douglas’ demands for a complete bombing halt, withdrawal Stanley Ryerson is featured speaker. Ryerson also speak «Page 8—PACIFIC TRIBUNE—MAY 31, 1968 of U.S. troops, and the cessation of arms shipments to the U.S. are good. However, the Communist position goes beyond that.” “We fully support the Vietnamese in their struggle for national liberation, and we recognise the National Liberation Front as the sole legitimate representative of the South Vietnamese. We stand for a complete break with the American war alliances, not only the Defense Sharing Agreement, but also NATO and NORAD. We see the war as part of the imperialist pattern of U.S. aggression against many countries.” “A policy of opposition to the U.S. war would be a first expression of the kind of independent foreign _policy Canada needs’’, she said. Cut in Medicare premiums urged A demand that Federal contributions to medical service costs of the people ‘of this province be taken off premiums charged by the B.C. government Medical Plan was placed before the Bennett government this week by the Communist Party. y “The people of British Columbia, like those in other provinces, have been. expecting a substantial reduction in- premiums when the new Federal medicare grants come into effect at July 1st.” the letter from Nigel Morgan, Provincial leader of the Communist Party declared. “Your announcement that there will be no reduction in rates when the estimated $35 million contribution is received in Victoria from Ottawa is a bitter disappointment and completely unacceptable’’. “The Federal grant is being made to provide medicare, and not to finance more dams and superports for the benefit of foreign U.S. and Japanese monopoly concerns grabbing up our resources.”’ “The people of this province will be robbed of the benefits of the Federal this week,” he warned. grants commencing July ‘Ist unless powerful, mass pressure is brought to ‘bear to compel the Bennett government to reconsider the proposal announced that they’re not prepared to accept anything less.” Your $$ needed for election campaign By NIGEL MORGAN. CP Campaign Manager Canada’s “‘Day of Decision’”’ — the Federal Election — is now less than four weeks away. How the people vote in that election may determine many crucial decisions over the next five years. These are days of growing fight- back against the war-makers, the big Corporations and governments that do their bidding. Fight-back can win victories which will strengthen the position of working people and curb the power of the monopolies to dictate the economic and political life of our country. The Communist Party is fighting to elect the largest group of progressives — _ including Communists — to strengthen the struggle for peace; repatriate our economy; nationalize the big foreign and domestic monopolies: extend democracy in Canada and win improvements in social legislation, housing, pensions, education; and curb profiteering. We have a program that will evoke Tesponse in this campaign, deepen the debate, and help open the way to emergence of a new electoral force, the coalition of the future. The Communist Party stands before the electors today as the only organized force advancing the socialist restructuring of our society. Because of this we have earned the hatred of the Establishment. Our candidates face a deliberate blackout inthe mass mediums that shape public opinion. The Communist Party and its candidates have something to say that must be said, and won’t be said by any other party in this election. It will cost money to say it. Our Party plans to distribute 75,000 copies of an attractive, well-illustrated, 8-page, 2- color platform; thousands of- additional copies of the Tribune (with two editions each week this month). Broadcasts and newspaper adverts will be required to take our message to the people and build a stronger Communist Party. We need YOUR help. Won’t you sit down NOW and send in a contribution to help our campaign and the courageous hard-hitting. candidates of the Communist Party carry our message to the people? All contributions large or small will be appreciated. Send all donations to Communist Election Hdgqrs., Rm. 502 - Ford Bldg., 193 E. Hastings St., Vancouver 4.
