—COUNC SEP 10 1979 Mayor and Council , September 5th, 1979 MEMORANDUM Alderman E.W. Mabbett The minutes of the May Day Committee meeting of August 27th, 1979 were earlier circulated to Council members and are attached to this report. In a discussion with Mrs. Doris Buxton following the meeting I agreed that I would recommend to Council the following: 1. That a decision by Council be made as early as possible as to whether May Day will continue in 1980. In this regard I would recommend that Council be prepared to discuss May Day and make a decision at the October 1st, 1979 meeting of Council. : That if it is Council's desire to continue with May Day that a maximum budget figure of $17,000.00 be established. You will note that although the exact final figures for 1979 are not shown in the Committee minutes of August 27th, 1979, the actual cost to the City was in the neighbourhood of $12,000.00 to $13,000.00. As you are aware th2 May Day float won three awards this year; the “ P.N.E. being the highlight. This float is a great way of advertising our City for quite a nominal cost. My understanding is that if we are going to continue with May Day a fair number of dollars must be expended on the float, both mechanically and for new decorations. If it is Council's decision to carry on with May Day I would recommend $2,000.00 of this current year's surplus be set for the float improvements required. Respectfully submitted, Alderman E.W. Mabbett
