Most of them have faded from . Memory, however, there ' are several which will bear . mentioning as each of them considerable magnitude. _ One of these properties ‘was on the north side and near the upper end of the _ Big Canyon, a mile or 80 ‘ west of Usk. This show was held and worked by Moodys, father and -.son, who headquartered at Usk. They. installed a small compressor and other equipment required for a medium sized mining venture. For some reason not known to the writer, but : it could be surmised a lack of sufficient ore. Another property a few miles east of Usk was known as The Nicholson Creek Mining Co. Buck Shannon was the moving factor at this mine. Mr. Shannon was evidently an expert _ promoter. He would go south in the fall and return in the spring with sufficient funds for the seasons operation. The Nicholson Mining was no two bit operation, They had a large diesel powered compressor together with modern underground ectric + Wi PP camp, Pilacksmith and machine shop, ete. Buck was not only a good ' promoter but was a first class mechanic. Prior to his mining venture he had been master mechanic in one of the larger sawmills. He had also held a position as Tie and Timber Inspector on the railway. Inspite of Shannon’s other accomplishments, Buck lacked one very necessary adjunct and that was ore at the mine. Some of the men who worked for him said that Buck always main- tained if they went far enough underground: that eventually they would ‘‘hit the jackpot’. Such faith seems (© be unbounded. providing | a ays in someone else is supplying the ‘funds’, The largest mining (lode) venture was sparked by the ‘big gun’ in mining who headquartered at Usk, Captain Wellman. The - concentrator. captain was a big husky Norwegian who liked his whiskey and was reputed to be quite the ‘ladies man’. No matter what his likes or dislikes he sure was a promoter from the head- waters. First of all, after his arrival and with hired help he did some extensive ex- ploration, Gold Creek side of iumario Mountain. . His ‘prospecting crew worked their way up the mountain and near the height of land some very promisin showings were discover and located. Give the Captain credit, he was very thorough in the process of exploration. He carried out some intensive work on this high level showing and from all reports it had every in- dication of an extensive ore body. All of this wasn't done in a month or two but was carried on for possibly 18 months. The rumours then began to circulate that Captain Wellman was forming a mining company and in- tended to install a 25 ton The next rumour, which turned out to —sormom==10 10 ==0rsI0=== Terrace Little Theatre Robin McColl, well known in Terrace as both a director and an actor, will direct the, play ‘Adaptation” as his entry in Drama Jubilee. The actual mining plan was to drive a 600 foot main hulage tunnel which was to contact the ore body at depth. Everything seemed to be moving along ac- cording to plan. The mill was built and the 6000 foot the sup- posedly towards the cre y, they had encountered several small stringers of milling ore and this ore was utilized to get the mill tuned up for the day when the tunnel reached the ‘main ore body’. In conclusion, the reader will likely surmise that the writer has tried to downgrade the mining potential in the Terrace area. Not so!! To wit, four claims on Marcon Mtn. seven on Thornhill Mtn. and three placer leases on Douglas Creek. Some of these claims have been in existence from the 1907-1909 period, staked by the old time prospectors and bought in later years by the present owner, Presumably, this calls to mind another (cold saw) naeee ‘is’ goldin them ther Thanks to the editor of the Herald, should he decide to print this. FINAL NOTE The writer recognized his obligation to explain his use of the word ‘promoter’. This was with no aspersion cast on the character of the persons referred to in this article. On the contrary, it should be applied as meaning the ability of the promoter to raise funds, i the sole purpose of developing w appeared to be a legitimate mineral showing.
