A8 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, June 16, 1999 Psych service boost sought at the college NORTHWEST COMMUNITY College has been chosen to join a two-year project sponsored by the Canadian Men- tal Health Association (CMHA). Supports for Higher Education: Spreading the Word About est Practices is designed to better the services and supports available to people with psychiatric disabilities in | post secondary institutions. Elizabeth Snyder, Co-ordinator of Services for Students with Disabilities at NWCC, said this project is a unique and challenging opportunity to improve existing services. “This is a chance for us to take a close look at our ser-. vices and ask what can we be doing better,’”’ she said. ‘We're going to have to be creative, but what we will get out of the project will be priceless,’’ Snyder said in ad- ding there isn’t any extra money attached to the project. The CHMA project is being held in six post secondary institutions across Canada to assure diversity. “NWCC is a multi-campus college so services on cach campus will reflect a different community,” Snyder said. Diversity from campus to campus is an important aspect of the project, but diversity from person to person is what will be most beneficial ta NWCC, Snyder said. “There may be some similarities in assistance we give to’ students with mental illness, but it ultimately bas to be _ tailored to each individual.”’ The project is also an opportunity to educate people about mental illness, Snyder added, “There is such a stereotype associated with mental ill- ness and it can leave people feeling isolated and alone,”’ she said, ELIZABETH SNYDER from Northwest Community College is leading a two-year project aimed at batter- ing services to students with psychiatric disabilities.
