A2- The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, February 14, 2001 B.C. Libs to purge civil service of politically-appointed NDPers A 3B.C, LIBERAL government, if elected, will rout out politically-appointed civil servants hired during the NDP years, party leader Gordon Campbell said during a visit here last week. “There’s no question this government has politicized the civil service,” said Campbell, “What we need is a professional and non-partisan civil service who do their jobs based on results.” Campbell said the number of anonymous, plain brown envelopes sent by civil servants to his caucus has in- creased simply because they’re worried about the extent that politics now plays in decision making. “It’s like the Thought Police. I was told of a person who was afraid to talk on the phone for fear of being School site still unknown By JENNIFER LANG WITH JUST a few months before construction tenders are supposed to go out, the final location for a new Skeena Junior Secondary is still up in the air. Coast Mountains School District maintenance super- intendent Robert Gilfillan said additional geotechnical Surveys are needed. “We're still looking for the perfect site for the school,” Gilfillan told the schoo! board Feb. 7. Although the school board had chosen the northeast corner of the school’s present property as the best site because of its proximity ta nearby Caledonia Senior Secondary, Gilfillan said the new 7,480-square metre school may be built much closer to the current building. “The northeast corner is probably the most unlikely place to put it,” he said, adding soil surveys done this summer indicated that site may be where dirt excavated to make way for the original school foundation was dumped. “What we're looking at is putting it as close as possible to the existing building,” Gilfillan said. That would put the $12 million new junior high just behind the present school, sitting partially on the exist- ing back parking Lot and schoo! track. Vehicle access, parking and drop off points would front Munroe Street — about where Skeena school is now. Until the final site is chosen, the architects won’t be able to present the public with design drawings. But Gilfillan is confident the location and other de- tails will be firmed up in time for a design development meeting March 7, paving the way for a public presenta- tion on the design plan a couple of weeks later. “Right now there’s nothing to present,” he said. The school district has hired a project management team from the Surrey school district to work with local people and the architect to develop the design. The Sur- rey team will also be responsible for overseeing the pro- ject and ensuring it stays within budget. School District 36’s business management services department and architect Grant and Sinclair of Vancou- ver will meet with Coast Mountaitis’ officials," Skecna vice principal ‘Todd Hollett, and Skeena staff representa: ° tive Gerry Coimford ‘Feb. 20, "1" Comford’s inclusion on the building committee came just last week after Terrace District Teachers’ Union president Frank Rowe said school staff are being left out of design decisions that will directly affect them. . “We simply would like the opportunity to have the ieeds and concerts and desires of the teachers consid- ered,” Rowe said.. ‘ Rowe added students and the public should also have a chance to give their opinion. . ae FEB. 17 &18 of SAT. -6PM ; HEARTS www.vaslety been . epctvy |}669-KIDS. And if those backgrounds tum up people who weten’t . hired through the normal civil service procedures, “you’ve got ta be skeptical of them,” he added. Those weeded out after the background checks will be treated fairly on their way out the door in terms of se- verance, Campbell continued. “It's not going to be easy, bul it's necessary,” said Campbell of his plans. He conceded that severance pay- ments could add up. “T would hope that people of principle, who were hired for their views, will do the honourable thing and resign,” Campbell said. ‘The B.C. Liberal leader did say that civil servants who do their jobs professionally but who do also hald NDP cards won’t be affected by his plans. “I know the value of a professional civil service. It is the most valuable asset we can have,” said Campbell. “We want to see those professionals at work.” SAFEWAY FOOD & DRUG he 9 SAVE at least $4.89 pe Works aut to 5B¢ ea, Safeway Club Price 3 7 “Kraft — | att 12 x 225 9.
