Libs split on Kemano talks SKEENA LIBERAL. candi- date Rick Wozney is dis- tancing himself from the position Liberal leader Gor- don Campbell has taken on negotiations with Alcan. ~ Campbell released a list of items he says should be in- cluded in any deal te com- pensate Alcan for the pro- vince’s decision a year ago to kill the half-built Kemano Completion Project, Among them was in- creased water flow in the Nechako and constriction . of a cold-water release ito talks~is “that the province protect salmon, as well as an end to Alcan’s property tax exemption on generating facilities, “There are a couple of items in there on which we have kind of agreed to dis- agree,’’ Wozney said. Skeena MLA Helmut Giesbrecht attacked the Campbell statements soon after they were released, saying it could threaten Kilimat jobs, Wozney said he took the matter up with Campbell last week and noted in par- ticular the statement gave litle indication who would pay for some of the costly items. “{ painted out to him the press release was a little thin on the points that it made,” he said. Wozncy says he wan't shy away from taking a stand on issues where he differs from Campbell. “If issues come up that are negative for Skeena I am certainly going to speak out on them,”’ he said. Wozncy noted his own vo- cal opposition when Camp- bell first said a Liberal —_ mw a a et Can't Wait For 4 Spring , Get Away Contest Can’t Wait For 1 Spring I Get Away Contest government would kill the Kemano Completion Pro- ject. “Obviously there have been na repercussions about that because he has endorsed my nomination as candidate for Skeena,’’ he said. ‘‘My position is and always will be that Skeena is first.’” Wozney said it’s time to give people a better under- standing of what’s going on in the negotiations. ‘The basic principle of the will séll Alcan the 285 megawatts of power KCP would have generated when the company needs’ it to power a new aluminum smelter. The deadline for reaching an agreement was to be this week, Wozney said the talks have been going on in secre! for too long, ‘It’s time that whatever negotiations going on be- hind closed doors in secret with Alcan should come out in the open,”’ he said. He noted the NDP cited the secret negotiations that had gone on in the past with Alcan as one reason for kili- ing the deal, adding it’s not acceptabie for them to now do the same thing. Police explode case of Anglican priest THE STORY of a briefcase stolen in San Francisco has ended with an unexpected —~ and explosive — local twist. Father Ian Mackenzie, an Anglican priest and member of the Nisga’a Tribal Council, left his briefcase in the unlocked trunk of a rental car while in San Francisca in late January. He walked away from the car and turned around in time to see a man drive up, whip up the unlocked trunk lid, grab the bricf- case, get back in his car and race down the Street, Mackenzie gave chase and got a partial licence plate number which he then tumed over to the police. Marin County sheriffs investigated but nothing came of the theft. » This month Mackenzie got a call — at 4 a.m, one night — from the sheriff's office telling bim the thief had returned the brief- case. “I guess when they opened it up and dis- covered ] was a priest they felt guilty,”’ Mackenzie said. ‘‘So they wrapped it up in duct tape and left it in front of the police station,'” That proved to be a mistake. It was the same night that the first execu- tion in many years was to take place at San Quentin prison, There had already been a number of bomb threats, and officers evacuated their building and surrounding area near the suspicious-looking briefcase: ” Bomb disposal experts concluded it might be a bomb and detonated Mackenzic’s briefcase. It contained documents and brochures about the Nisga’a House of Wisdom, opera- ted in conjunction with the University of Northem B.C. Tt didn’t contain any documents pertain- ing to the Nisga’a land claim negotiations so there weren’t sensitive documents fut- tering down on the strect outside the sheriff's office. Mackenzie says the police have told him they'll send the briefcase back; he’s still waiting, in town!
