d CHEF GORD ladles out beef casserole in the caoking area of the Lutheran church as the Terrace Anti-Poverty Group Society's soup kitchen gears up for another lunch hour. School children make up a great part of the kitchen’s clientele. Kitimat wants out TERRACE — Kitimat council noted Anderson, Terrace Standard, Wednesday, October 7, 1992 — Page AQ Soup kitchen carries on. despite school food plan TERRACE — It’s an average Thursday at the soup kitchen — about 30 kids walk the two blocks froma Clarence Michie} Elementary school to the Lutheran church for their noon- hour staple, There are about 20 adults bere. © today, too. But they usually only show up in large numbers near the end of the month when their welfare money is stretched thin. Terrace’s children of the poor are the main clientele, says Ter- tact Anti-Poverty Group Society spokesman Gerald King, On the menu today is wieners- and-beans or beef casserole. On other days the entree is. often soup, stew or chili. They also get a choice of juice or chocolate milk, and — if they eat the main course — they’re allowed up to two donuts, “Tt’s a house rule,’’ says King, “No eat. No donuts,’” Bad weather has brought the numbers down somewhat from last spring, when nearly 80 chil- dren a day visited the soup kitch- en on Sparks St, But society volunteer Ross Walker predicts demand will come back up and the students will keep returning for hot lun- ches, despite a program being sct up by the school board to supply students with a free bagged lunch. The anti-poverty group is one of the bidders for the contract to provide the program, but Walker says he believes the children will stick with the hot lunch at the soup kitchen. “That’s what the students said they wanted in an informal sur- vey,’’ he said. ‘In some cases it’s the only hot meal] these kids get in the day.” “My feeling is they will keep coming — they've been fighting through ‘this rainy weather to come like droves to the soup kitchen.”’ Bidding for the new lunch pro- gram, which is to supply about 100 bagged sandwich lunches a day to students at Clarence Michicl Elementary School and E, T. Kenney Primary School, closed last Thursday. School district officials were unable to say how many bids had been received on Friday. Walker said Terrace Anii- Poverty submitted a bid based on a daily rate for about 100 meals per day. The bagged sandwich lunch is to provide a minimum one-third of a student’s daily caloric necds. King said many people here don’t realize what poverty exists in Terrace. He estimates as many as 1,600 people are on welfare here. “This is the purest investment we can make in the future,” King says of programs to guarantee schoolchildren a lunch each day. **These kids, without a meal, are off sick, or if they are at school they're just tolerating — they’re not learning.’’ “This will save us enormous amounts of money over the long term,” King said the soup kitchen now operates mainly on bingo money. The soup kitchen closed when the recession cased in 1984, but re-opened two years ago. “We're trying to get larger facilities. The Lutheran church is a bit small for what we're trying to do,”’ Walker said. — He said health ministry rules don’t permit the society to deliver a hot meal 1o school children, so the saciety decided to bid for the Walker said be’d like to sce an arrangement where the children were bused to the kitchen. “The thing that’s nice about it is the parents can meet the chil- dren there.’’ The school board received an $84,400 grant last spring to pro- vide a school lunch program here. “Regardless of what happens we're going to keep operating,” bagged lunch contract.
