John Newhouse said weather conditions and other. problems have combined to make finishing the 30 Mile corner pro- ject this year impossible. “We tried paving the eastern portion of the project and found that it cracked,” said Newhouse. He said the gravel base on the section will be sufficient until paving can take place next spr- ing. The checks in one week form a new provincial effort to remove unsafe vehicles from the roads, says Vedder Morton of the motor vehicle branch’s regional office here. “At the start there'll be lots of warnings and likely very few orders given (for repairs),”’ Morton said. Motor Vehicle Act provisions call for fines should the repairs not be made within a specified time, he added. The checks will apply to all vehicles under -7,;700kg in . weight, Roadblocks will go up Jan. 17 and 18. Grossly unsafe vehicles can be taken off the road at the time they are checked. There are 10 authorized in- spection outlets in town and the cost will be the responsibility of the vehicle owner. “No question, Some people are going to be hurt, but it will be safer to have them fix what is wrong before they get info an accident,”’ said Morton. Vehicle safety checks are new to the north but not to the lower mainjand or southern Van- couver Island where the provin- cial government operated checking facilities until they were closed during the .govern- ment cutbacks of 1983.: Although most people have their cars checked during TAKE CHARGE FUEL SAVINGS | GRE VEHICLE CONVERSION FINANCE PACKAGE ~ For further details contact alther:, THORNHILL HUSKY . at. 635-3717 OF WITH 7 EL Es 1A FROM GE AUTO-PROPANE 0.A.C.
