Tourism as it should be Terrace—The man has talent and he knows how to promote a good concept. For Martin Schmiderer, Terrace’s future lies in tourism. What else is there? he asked. The key to success, Schmiderer said, is ‘‘promoting what we have that is better than everyone else.’’ That something is fishing in estima- tion. He has been intro- ducing clientele from “fall over the world’’ to the delights of fishing habitats in the Pacific Northwest for a num- ber of years now. Schmiderer opens for business in March and entertains sport fisher- men from areas such as South Africa, Singa- pore, the United States, and ‘‘all over Europe’’ until October of .each year. For approximately three days of each week guests are housed at:a base station in Terrace and “the rest of the time we are out at fishing camps”’ in the region, Schmiderer ex- plained. He believes tourism concepts such as the fishing business should be promoted as they can provide an alterna- tive income for local residents who have been left unemployed by work force reductions in the woods industry. Schmid- erer recently received a letter from Len Co- della of Thomas and Thomas in Turners Falls, Mass. ‘‘You will be pleased to learn that all of the guests ... that we have spoken to since visiting your lodge and fishing with you, have indicated they could not he more pleased with everything they experi- enced there.” Martin Schmiderer Schmiderer believes in a fishing future for the Terrace region and he is certain it can be a growth industry if en- thusiastic promotions are adopted as part of the business visionary process. I am open to helping other people in the northwest tourism in- dustry, Schmiderer said. I do not see other fishing guides as competitors. Increased competition makes everyone provide healthy services for tourists. If you promote a con- cept properly, com- petiton can be of value. It makes promoters work harder to offer the best service possible for tourists, which in turn helps attract more people to the area. “This is my philos- ophy,’’ Schmiderer said.
