. AG~The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, February 9, 2005 CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD Th Mail Bag ‘Letter was disrespectful | Dear Sir: [am writing this letter in regard to Dr. David Heinimann’s » Dec. 22, 2004 letter to the editor regarding the totem pole _ _ that was raised at Northwest. Community College (NWCC) : in Terrace last November. ‘It is unfortunate that Dr.. Heinimann feels that only one “Sother-nation should be added and that he is indirect enough to’call: that other nation‘the technological nation”. The creation of the totem pole is a complex and intricate - process. The individuals who are blessed with this spirit and _ talent are deeply respected j in First Nations communities. Dr. Heinimann’s letter is a perfect example of the disre- spect and misunderstanding regarding the evolution of cul- tures and the inevitable right to grow and change. _ ‘Dr. Heinimann needs to understand that one culture is not ° responsible for technological change, many are. There are many ways to view the totem pote that has been 7 raised with respect at NWCC. Eventually, the pole will bio- degrade into the earth and be only a wonderful memory. Oh, but'wait. The stecl pole and the concrete will still be there to remind the technological nation of how wonderful they are. Carolyn A. Doody, B.Ed Iskut, | B.C, “Pole a unique project ears for the northwest — “oD was: "very: disappointed ’ to read the letter to the editor _ dated Dec, 22, 2004 that was ~ written by Dr. David Heini- mann. This negatively pro- _ ‘vocative letter distracts the _reader from the true signifi- . cance of the NWCC totem’ . pole and First Nations com-’. munities in the northwest. At also reflects..a lack of fespect for First Nations culture and history and the . unique process that brought _ this pole to completion. » » This contemporary totém , __. . + pole. was carvedin recogni- (tion of, the importance of . - education to the First, Na- - tions of the northwest, now. “and for future generations; The pole reflects the seven First. Nations that reside in the northwest and take Part in educa-- ‘tion atthe colleges es ‘It acknowledges the rich. culture’ and iradition: of First. Nations in the northwest and the college’s commitment to diversity and equality. It stands.as a reminder that education — . 1S a goal that draws all nations together. The totem pole raising event, Nov. 12, 2004, was a his- toric moment. Never before have seven First Nations come. together for such a project. Never before have all seven riorthwest First Nations been represented on a totem pole. Nov. 12, 2004 was a very proud day for First Nations and 1 would hope that the entire college community shares this sentiment. Stephanie Forsyth, President, Northwest Community College, Terrace, B.C. ‘Technological nation’ not necessarily ‘white’ Dear Sir: Beverley Clifton Percival’s Feb. 2, 2005 letter to the edi-*, |. tor, in reply to mine of Dec. 22, 2004 on the Northwest Com- munity College. totem pole, was stimulating for my ethics class (which includes First Nations). ° _ The’ Students saw that my identification of the “techno- ~~ logical nation” could be construed as “white” technology, which is how Ms. Clifton. Percival. and others (including whites) have chosen to read it. ‘In doing so, they unwittingly: (and conveniently) refuse to include First Nations in the technological nation. The stu- _ dents, to their credit, also recognized that subtler point, that “technological nation” applies to all of us everywhere, his- torically and now. . Irony is difficult to write, even more to interpret, espe- cially when justifiable sensitivities are involved. I thank Ms. Clifton Percival for her letter’s demonstration of that and its. contribution lo our ethics class. _ Ms. Clifton Percival says my reputation precedes me. My ‘only lowly repute is that of strict grammarian. At the risk of sounding colonialist to: her, I suggest that Ms, Clifton Per- cival review her grammar, Error must not cloud meaning. .
