Looking over. revised (but still in complete) compilations by the Canad ian Press of the voting by parties and provinces in our recent election, some curious things are seen. In the first place while the Conser valive vote was 687,000 Jess than in 1920, the gnin in Liberal vates over 1980 was but 162,000, The seeming inference from this is. that the loss of the Conservatives was not so much to the Liberal as to the other parties-— the Reconstructionists, ©. C. F. and SocinI Credit—these groups polling a combined vote of 847,000. Certainly ii would appear that the new. parties = cut more henvily into the Conserva tives sban~into~ the: ‘Liberals; ~ Another: thing - eifiphasizéd 1 by the compltaton—by' thé cola figures—is the extracrdimrg feeble showing of the Reconstruction party. Thus in Prince Edward Island’ they séenred but 2,192 votes; in Quebec, where there were. 1,010,541 votes, but 99,000; in Saskatchewan but 655 and in British Columbia, Mr, Stevens own province, but 16,000. Indeed, going over the Reeonstruction record constituency by constituency, its chief, or. only achle vement is found to. be a contribution toward defernt of Conservative candi dates. , fo. All but negligible, tan,: was the popu lar: yote of the C.C.F, party. Polling no votes in the Maritimes at all, it got less than 8,000 in Quebee, ran behind both Liberals and Conservatives in.the three prairie provinces. Only in Brit ish Columbia did it make a showing, and oven there it polled only 77,000 yotex out of a total of 228,000, Cer tainly whatever the Canndian people voted for they didn’t vote for Sacial ism, - Something in Vancouver tor nothing —dimission to the winter fair ani the seed and root show.. But then the pro. vinelal government meets most of the OXTCHSCS, carry return limit * over privileges. "V-65-85 are in effect from December 1 to January 5.
