FRANK SINATRA “Where yo u'll gain : 4 is in the heart” 7 “One of the best in- vestments you can make ewon't return a penny to your ket. Where you'H gain is the heart’ says Frank Sinatra talking about how Easter Seals help crippled children throughout British Columbia. cate Lions Easter — mpaign for 1977 begins March 1 and has a target of $550,000 to maintain . and operate its programs to help é 25,000 crippled children In British Columbia. The first Lions Easter Seal Campaign in - 1948 raised $48,942. Since then the British Columbia Lions Society- for Crippled Children has built the largest transportation system for the handicapped inthe world. Now 100 Easter Seal buses travel more than 1% million miles a year transporting more ‘than 5,000 crippled children to schools, treatment centres, special classes and recreation, in more than 40 communities from Dawson Creek to White Rock and. Campheli River to Fernie. When the buses are not on scheduled routes they are used b handicapped adults, much like a taxi service. Easter Seals also help. support the Lions three Easter Seal Camps at Lake Cowichan on ancouver Island, Winfield in the Okanagan and Squamish, where more than 1,000 disabled youngsters have a holiday every year. The Lions also operate Easter Seal House, a home away from home for disabled youngsters who must come to Vancouver with a parent for diagnosis and treatment at Vancouver General Hospital. Other Easter’ Seal_ser- vices provided by the Lions include help for children with cleft lip and palate or scoliosis, prosthesis and special projects. , ‘FRANK SINATRA In speaking about crip- pled children’ Mr. Sinatra says: “Life hasn’t been easy. for these kids, but ‘they’re fighters. So back a fighter, when Easter Seals come in the mailbox, use them. And don’t forget to send a cheque.” Mr. Sinatra made radio and television commercials free of charge to heip the Easter Seal -people raise $550,000 for ~.crippled .- children Protection for children too Summer vacations are very likely in the planning stages right now, exotic destinations being studied, mileages checked and campsites and roadside attractions sought par- ticularly to please the children. You wouldn’t- think of leaving on your holiday without first tuning up your vehicle and checking the tires, says the B.C. Automobile Association. It just wouldn’t be safe for your family: Then why are you going to set off without an approved child car restraint? Is it because you don’t know which one to get, don’t know how to fit, haven’t got around to buying it yet, or just can’t be bothered taking it in-and out of your car? None of these excuses will be of any consolation, warns the Association, once your child has suffered severe head injuries from being violently thrown about the interior of your vehicle in a sudden stop. Driving is'a full time jeb, requiring full concentration. You need both hands om the wheel and have .no time to check up on your - youngster’s antics and acrobatics. Until your baby is about 15 pounds, he should be placed . either in a strong, well- padded car bed secured to the centre of the rear seat with two lap belts, or in a tub-shaped infant carrier in a semi-reclined position with secure straps over his shoulders and around his torso,, The infant carriers are not yet tested or regulated by the govern- ment for use in motor vehicles. Once your child can hold his head erect, and until he is about four years old or 40 pounds in weight, buy an approved ear seat and follow the installation in- structions to the letter. When you purchase the seat, - the B.C.A.A. advises that - you look for a decal on it which states: “This product complies with applicable requirements of the Children’s Car Seats and Harnesses Regulations.” If. it doesn’t say this, don't buy it, The ideal position for the . child seat is the centre rear seat of your vehicle. If the child seat has a top fastening strap, always use it and secure it without slack, if you expect the. restraint to be of any safety value. The special anchor supplied with the seat should be attached to a sturdy steel panel behind the rear seat and not to a CA Institute of Chartered Accountants _ of British Columbia Members of the Institute in B.C. provide tie foliowing services: AUDITING AND ACCOUNTING INCOME TAX CONSULTING ESTATE PLANNING For a chartered accountant In your area, consult the "Yellow Pages” of your phone book ‘ MANAGEMENT CONSULTING | ° cardboard or plastic shelf. "If the child seat is being used in the front of the car, fasten it to the safety belt in the rear of the ear, Avoid a child seat with a top fastening strap on a high- backed bucket seat, the club suggests, because the stra will slide off -the curv sides of the head rest. If the head rest is-adjustable, run the strap between the head -rest and the seat top to minimize the effects of a side collision. A high-backed child restraint would be best for use on a low backed seat to protect the child from. whiplash. Never rely on the - fold-down padded guards to keep. your child in place. They are too rly ~ at- -tached to be effective in even minor accidents. If the seat requires the use of the adult lap belt, fasten the belt snugly: loose. : +. Child car seats approved for use in Canada are: Dorel's' Trav-L-Guard, Mode] 085; Questor’s Kantwet Carseat, Medel 985; Canadian Mer- chandising’s modified Peterson Model 74; American Safety Equip- ment’s Swing-o-matic and the Strolee 5975, There is also a new GM seat which has just recently been ap proved for use in Canada and should soon be available in mest department stores. Unfortunately there are. |. no approved safety restraints in Canada for children in the 30 to 50 pound range who are too large for thecar seats but not yet tall enough for adult seat belts to be fully effective. There are child harnesses ap-_ proved for use in Britain and the U.S. for this age grou ' but none have yet been able to meet the Canadian standards. . ‘ The BCAA can only suggest that the parent raise the child up on a firm non- slip cushion and then fasten him or her. into the regular seat belt. Care should be taken to position the belt at the correct angle across the hips and not to let it ride up across the child's abdomen where it could cause serious abdominal ‘injuries in collision situations. ~ In addition the BCAA recommends that you follow these tips: Lo - Don’t carry your child in our arms. You may think 2 will be safe, but in any sudden accident, he would be crushed between you and the dashboard. - Don’t strap two children and: don’t, leave .it;; into‘one'seat. belt, «..:" y Don’t carry unsecured, hard, heavy or sharp objects or. potentially’ dangerous toys in the car with children. Lock all the car doors to prevent them from swinging open in the event of _a collision. .
