PAGE B2, THE HERALD, Wednesday, July 7, 1976 Terrace Little Theatre coffee house BY LILLIAN BJORNGON . Presented, Stephen Elljott in “Concert” July 4th, 1976 The apdience sat en- thralled as Stephen Elliott roused the strings of his guitar to such “Classicals” as “‘Pavanos”, a i6th century Spanish dance by Gaspar Sanz, a “Sonata Brillante’ by Mauro Guiliani, or the “Compnaa Del Alba" by Eduardo Sainz De lo Maza, also the “Venezuelan Dances" by Antonio Lauro, or his “Etude” No. 19, by Malteo Carcassi. Stephen’s ability to animate such stirring pieces as ‘‘Sonatino” by Fredrico Mecreno Torrcba must be seen to be beleived. His supple fingers, fairly flying as they carress the strings to life. His rapport with the audience was a mutual affair, the audience was impressed by his agile renditions of “Two Preludes” by Manuel Ponce and the “English Suite" by John Duarte. _ Overall his performance was “Par Excellence’, Our next “Concert" will be a well known and very ver- salile performer in the person of John Palmer,', a faithful regular at our “Coffee houses” since its inception a few months ago. Jobn hails originally from Ottawa, Ontario. He will be performing his own songs garnered from the fields of life. They are written from the overwhelming influence of his life-syle in Ireland, Scotland and Evrope in general. He is ona personal crusade against the mass produced ‘radio chart musie”’. John is in search of the “‘Real Him”’ so to speak. He feels he can com- municate with people and . life in general through the words and music of his songs, He seeks to eliminate the barriers of age or the “Generation Gap”. He feels his music is, and should be for all ages. His music revolves around the “softer rock’ and “folk era'’. Reaching out to communicate to and be involved with his audience. He thoroughly enjoys audience participation and heis reaching out to you his audience and general public to come and listen, relax, and enjoy what he has to say. He isolated himself from the commercialism of life to be able better com- municate with his feelings, so that his music might have * more simplicity and honesty to bring to you. John’s Information: Today there is acceptance of the theory that alcoholism is an illness and that it can be arrested if the alcohclic accepts his alcoholism and stops drinking. With the help of Alcoholics Anonymous, this end can be attained with institutionalized patients. As this becomes more and more evident, the attitude of hospital authorities is changing, resulting in many new facilities for alcoholics. Members of A.A. carry the message of recovery to hospital patients throughout the world. There are presently more than 1,300 A.A, groups in hospitals. Attendance at AA. meetings is voluntary at most of them, open to patients who feel they might ave a problem with alcohol. In addition to setting up meetings, A.A. members arrange to sponsor patients when they are discharged and to guide themthroughthe first dificult weeks of sobriety in the outside world. In some large cities, hospital authorities have set aside special wings or other facilities for the treatment 635-5636 or concert is Jul Theatre on Kalum St. ad- mission is $2.00 per person. Our next regular “Coffee House" is July 11th at 8p.m. Some of the new ‘ormers at the last “Coffee House” were Wayne Sheridan and Melissa Leichtenfelt who did a "Folk Duet’, Elaine Fleischmann who did a beautiful job on the “Classical Guitar’ and Denise and Tom Giroux who did a poetry reading and a song which they composed. Peter McLaughlin who- came to us from one of the local night clubs did some songs for us that I call “real easy listening’’ music. Hugo Zoellmer was another new comer to our midst, Hugo plays European Accordion music, lively tunes that “set your toes tapping”. We must vegretfully say “Adieu” to Detta Smith who is leaving for other places, at least for the summer and Angie Slingluff who is also going away for the summer months, we say “Hurry back" both of you. George Stokes, John Palmer and Jo- Anne Ames were also with us at the last ‘‘Coffee House’ and one more person I musn't forget is Rachel Mingale who without her, this “Coffee House’ would not exist. Rachel is working in Prince Rupert for the CBC radio. We have another “Con- cert” on July 24th with Michel Dumont, anyone who enjoys “Bob Dylan” will enjoy Michel Dumont. Michel says of himself and T quote,"I only accompany myself lam not a guitarist. My voice is my main in- strument, [ enjoy playing in pablic, and only wish I had written more “‘sing a long’ songs. 1 think my original material is both basic and different. ; He was born in Paris France and came to Toronto Canada at age 21. He Blays folk and bluegrass, and has played at Coffee houses,’ churches and in lots of “living rooms where he now makes his home in Victoria, B.C. He does “lunch hour mini-concerts in Victoria at -“Qpen Space Art Gallery”. His music is also influenced by Gordon Lightfoot, Tim Hardin, Phil Och, Donovan, Newman, The Beatles, Cochburn, Don McLean, and Paul Simon. Because of its Traditions, Alcoholics Anonymous has never established its own hospital facilities, nor identified the Fellowship with any instition.
