‘Area tenant

The Vancouver Tenants Coun-
cil will hold an open air meeting
at the Kitsilano Beach Park,
Cornwall and Yew, on Monday,
June 26 at 8 p.m. to acquaint
tenants with their rights as
tenants, and how to go about
getting on the civic voter’s list.

Alderman Harry Rankin and
Tenant’s Council secretary
Bruce Yorke will speak to the
meeting.

Burnaby Tenants’ Association
has been actively working on a
number of cases where evictions
and unjust action on the part of
apartment managers were
taken to public action and the
eviction notices subsequently
lifted.

The BTA also presented a brief
to the Burnaby Council which
dealt with two main points: Just
cause for eviction and rent
increases. Council did not see fit
to act on either matter.

The brief said that new tax
laws which will remove some of
the tax-free ride for owners of
apartment blocks will reduce
incentives to invest in them.

The BTA believes greatly in-
flated rents can result from a
combination of reasons and that
landlords should not be per-
mitted to use the tax changes as
a cover for increasing their
profits. They asked that council
do something about curbing
rent increases.

The Burnaby group puts out a
small paper which is invaluable
in that it gives the basic rights of
tenants; is a cohesive force to
link tenants together and is a
general source of information
for the vast numbers of citizens
who are tenants.

In distributing copies of their
paper, The Notice, however,
they found there was no ‘“‘free-
dom of the press’’ so far as
tenants are concerned. Many

environment?

The international conference
on protection of the natural
environment just held in Stock-
holm has attracted universal
attention because the problem
of continuing water and air pollu-
tion is causing widespread
concern; because there are very
real fears that the progressive
destruction of the biosphere can
undermine the natural condi-
tions essential to the very exis-
tence of mankind.

(The socialist countries, in the
main, were not in attendance at
this conference because of the
refusal by, the organizers to
accept representatives of some
of them, particularly the GDR.)

Of interest to readers of World
Marxist Review, in the light of
this conference, will be the
report in the June issue of an
international seminar held in
March in Prague under the
auspices of the Journal, and
attended by Marxist scientists
and representatives of Com-
munist and Workers’ Parties
from 36 countries.

Comparing the findings of the
two conferences will make clear
the basic differences, as well. as
the common factors, in the ap-
proach to the problem of pollu-
tion and the measures needed to

solve it. : a

PRINCE GEORGE — a
resident of Cottonwood Island
whose home was flooded last
week when the Nechako and
Fraser rivers spilled over the
Island says his home has been
irreparably damaged. Another
one of the 600 residents whose
home is flooded writes that ‘““‘We
are-all scattered around the
town, billeted in auto courts.
After our demonstration at city
hall we are now getting some
attention. The Red Cross is
providing some children’s
clothing. The civil defence is
supposed to be footing the bill
_and providing food vouchers.

“One of our demands was for
some flood relief or
compensation. The mayor would
not declare it a disaster, but we
forced him to ask W. A. C.
Bennett for help.
