The conference will address: ® pests and pest management © pesticide development and testing ® pesticide registration and regulation ' ® health and safaty issues associated with pesti- cide use Posiilonal Statements Tne Society Promoting Environmental Conservation (SPEC) is B.C.'s oldest and largest citizens’ environ- menial organization. Since its formation in 1969, SPEC has been involved in a host of pesticide issues making numerous appearances before the Pesticide Appeal Board and municipal councils. It is SPEC's position that pesticides should not be used unless they have been proven safe to humans and the environment by manufacturers and regulators. Until the necessity to prove harm is removed from the shoulders of citizens, SPEC advocates alternative approaches to pest control. The West Coast Environmental Law Association (WCELA} has been operating as an environmental law centre since 1975. We have represented a number of individuals and public interest groups before the Pesticide Appeai Board and have a4 long-standing interest in pesticide regulation and safety. WCELA is concerned with the problems inherent in the regulatory process as it now stands and we are presenily working with other non-governmental organizations In calling for a Parliamentary commit- tee on pesticide registration so that a model regula- tory process for Canada can be devised. Slmon Fraser University’s Master of Pest Manage- ment Program promotes a thorough understanding of the biology and ecology of pest species, and the integration of sound agricultural, forest and other practices with biological, genetic and chemical ap- Proaches to pest control. The aim is to maximize pest contro! with minimal doflar costs and minimal environmental and health hazards.
