B14 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, July 30, 1997 Riverboat Days should be great fun for sports nuts IF EVERYONE keeps their fingers crossed between now and the weekend, maybe the sun will shine on the wide vatiely of sporting events planned for River- boat Days. But even if clouds darken the skies, it’s sure to be a great weekend for sports. For starters, there’s the fourth annual Riverboat Days Youth Soccer Chal- lenge. It’s the biggest ever and promises to host some exciting saccer action. Games will get underway Friday evening, as teams from as far away as Ketchikan Alaska aiid the Queen Charlotte Istands to Smithers and Quesnel will compete in three age divi- sions. Terrace has at least one team entered in each of Under-12, Under-14 and Under-16 Boys and Girls groups. Games will be played at Christie Park starting Friday and running all day Satur- day and most of Sunday. Medallions will be present- ed to top teams after the final matches in each divi- sion, If soccer’s not your style, check out the Riverboat Days annual Mixed Slo- Pitch Tournament at River- side Park, The tourncy runs from August 1 to 4 and will fea- ture about 15 teams from around the northwest in- cluding Prince Rupert and Smithers. Round Robin play Starts Friday at 7 p.m. and the final round should get underway at about 2 p.m. Monday, At & p.m. Saturday, the Swanny Olympics skilis competition will take place. This fun competilion is open to everyone and features throwing challenges, foot races and a homerun con- test. Another fun competition will take place Sunday at 8 pm.— the Weird — and Wacky Games. This should be great for both spectators and participants since at least one of the crazy con- tests will involve tossing water balloons, The Paddlewheel Tavern featuring food and drink for thirsty spectators and athletes alike will also be open all weekend long at Riverside Park. Meanwhile, speed lovers will be sure to check out the Stock car races at the Ter- race Speedway on Saturday Starling at 2 p.m. and then again on Sunday at the same time. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the speedway. And for. those looking for action -on the courts, the . J ' Terrace Open tennis tourna- ment will be taking place’ August 2-4,- Singles play will take place Saturday for both men and women, while Doubles will be held Sunday and Mixed Doubles will play on Monday. , Competitors come from all over the region for this tournament, and the calibre of tennis is usually quite good. But Bill Redpath of. the Tennis Club says every- one is welcome to partici-— ‘pate and even beginner players will get to play at least a couple of matches. Tennis gets underway at 9 am. on each tournament day. And remember to keep those fingers crossed. Preps earn respect at Finals Northwest produces quality baseball clubs TERRACE’S 13-year-old baseball rep team managed the northwest’s best showing in modern history at this year’s Provincials July 18-19 in White Rock. Although Terrace lost two straight games in a two-game knockout tournament, both games were close and could have gone either way. In the first game against Powell River, Terrace was down 10-0 at the top of the fifth inning with one out and about to be ‘“‘mercied”” when their bats came alive. With bases loaded, Robert Garten-Zutter singled knocking in two runs. Daniel Matthews then walked to load the bases again and Matt Dean hit a triple to clean the bases and add to the score. After five innings it was 10-5 for Powell River. Three more runs were added in the sixth and one in the seventh. The final score was 14-9 for Powell river. Terrace’s final stats were: nine runs on 10 hits, two errors and 12 left on base. And Terrace’s M.V.P, was Robert Garten-Zutler cluded a triple once again by Matt Dean. In the bottom of the sec- ond, Penticton got four runs. But Penticton’s big inning was in the third, when they had eight runs on seven hils.
