B14 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, April 23, 1997 Bluebacks blast pool records THE BLUEBACKS must have taken the title of their Sprint Into Spring meet litezaily, The swim club sprung into action at the meet a few weekends ago and sprinted to the tune of six pool records. ‘Times were surprisingly fast,”’ says coach Mike Car- Iyle, ‘“We just got into hard taining and the kids were really tired. So it was very surprising to sce just how fast they could go.”” About 155 swimmers from the northwest attended the annual event in Terrace, which kick-staris the long course season. All six of the broken records were smashed by three Blueback swimmers. Seth Downs picked up a pool best in the 200 breast- stroke with bis time of 2:35.64 — beating the old lime by nearly five seconds. Julie Vanderlee also picked up two new records, one for her time of 2:35.05 in the 200 fly and the other for 2:15,15 in the 200 free. However, 15-year-old Chris Kerman stole the show with three pool records. Kerman knocked a second off the old record in the 100 backstroke and six seconds off the 2) backstroke record, but his time in 50 free was most impressive, Kerman raced the 50 metres in 25.51 seconds, beating the old record of 25.80 that has held for near- ly 20 years. A number of other swim- mers also fared well, with many first-lime provincial qualifiers including Kaya Downs, Amanda Fillion, Brenna and Chance Sterner, Gavin Wallace and Anna Farell, The Bluebacks were in Prince George this past weekend. Ju-Jitsu club scores in Williams Lake THE TERRACE Jv-lJitsu Club tock Williams Lake by storm three weekends ago at an open competition, taking home a big chunk of the medal tally. Some 85 compelitors from four different communities including Prince George and Quesnel took part in the tournament. Athletes ranged in from six-years-old to sea- soned veterans in their 40s. The girls also did well in imposed movements. Twelve-year-olds Shauna Palahicky and Caitlin Behm took gold, while Candace Klein and Kim McDonald took silver. Terrace competitors didn’t rack up quite as many medals in the Kime to Kata, but many still did well. John Barrett, Mark Biagioni, Jordan Schibly and Danny Barr all picked up bronze in the event. An¢é Caitlin Behm and Shauna Palahicky took gold, with Kim McDonald taking silver and Candace Klein taking a silver and a bronze. Our athletes performed exceptionally in sparring, with Jordan Schibly taking another gold, John Barrett a silver and Mark Biagioni a bronze. Danny Barr and Robert Wickie also picked up silvers. The girls also fought well, with Shauna Palahicky win- ning gold, Kim McDonald silver and Candace Klein and Caitlin Behm bronze. Kevin Makie took gold in the adult division. In the team sparring com- petition, Terrace took gold in the boys nine-and-under group, silver and bronze in the 10 and 11-year-old category and silver in the 12-and-olders.
