TERRACE. — More than 100 ‘people will gather in the Nass “Malley community of Canyon Clty this Saturday to hear of - plans to improve the northwest tourism industry. The meeting is the annual. ‘gathering of regional economic ‘development committees ‘established in 1988 to look into ° ‘specific ‘economic and social Totem pole has “unique ‘theme TERRACE — A prominent native carver in the Hazeltons is leading ‘the initial work on a “Totem Pole of Canada”’ sym- _ bolizing all of the country’s ' ethnic groups. ; -Ken Mowatt is supervising the roughing out of the 32-foot red cedar log and the carving of its first figure, according to Ron Burleigh, of the Kitanmaax School of Northwest Coast In- dian Art at K’san. “Ken is probably one of the finest carvers in this province and is a super designer,’ Burleigh ‘said. He said Mowatt will design a raven-figure — symbolizing all of the country’s native Indian groups — that will be carved as the.bottom totem in the pole by: the students in the school’s ad- eas vanced class. After the Hazelton-area carvers finish the work, Burleigh says it’s to be sent to the Ottawa School of Art, where it will be completed. “We'll get it all cleaned up, carve it, crate it and ship it to Ottawa,’’ Burleigh says, “where lord knows what will | happen to it.” i He said the carvers in Ottawa are expected to collect submis- sions from across the couniry for symbols of various ethnic groups to include in the figures to be placed on the pole. Burleigh notes that some peo- ple, in Ottawa, are describing the pole as a potential symbol of national unity. **] don’t know what kind of meaning people are trying to put on it at that end,'’ he said, “But we didn’t start out here to make some big political state- ment out of it. To us it’s a pro- ject for the students.” He’s expecting ihe initial work on the pole to be com- pleted and to have it shipped by mid-March. AIDS cases down TERRACE — The. northwest has one of the lowest AIDS in- fection rates in the province, ac- cording to 1990 figures released _last week, Only one person in the Skeena region tested positive last year for the HIV virus that causes Acquired Immune Defi- ciency Syndrome, said Dr. David Bowering, the Skeena Health Unit's medical health of. ficer. That total is down from five HIV-postive . tests recorded in 1989..He said twice as many people went in for AIDS testing in: 1990 as did the year before. ‘That means Terrace has one of the lowest rates —~ if not the lowest rate — in the Province,** Bowering said. But he added that doesn't mean the spread of AIDS isn't a threat in the northwest. He said somé high-risk. northwest residents may be going to Van- couver to ‘get tested, and theréfore wouldn’t show up in the regional figures. ‘The number of people who get tested and are found to be HIV-positive is believed to be — development issues, It will feature two reports on tourism —- one on the state of the industry here and ‘one on plans to gather.more informa- . tion, says regional development liaison officer Elmer Derrick. The idea is to develop a regional plan for tourism growth and promotion that doesn’t come from down south, said Derrick. Fob, 21-23, 1991 ANY FRESH SLICED DELI PRODUCT ‘There should ‘be planning and promotion directed to this regio as opposed to provincial market needs,”' he said. The followup study will look at numbers of tourists and what they do in the area, Derrick con-_ tinued. “Tt goes back to economic development. Tourism -is regarded asa major industry © but we don’t really know what we have, " he said. One initiative that could ta take . place is an effort to have people stay longer in the area when ~- visiting here. as tourists, Derrick a added.
