Local resident Nancy Zavaglia, a single mother of four, is trying to create public awareness about the issue. by Sherry Halfyard The Family Mainte- nance Program was an- nounced by Grace Mc- Carthy, Minister of Human Resources, Dec. 20, 1984. It was originally designed to help single parents on income assistance. The service was to provide them with legal counsel and automatic monitoring and enforcement of maintenance orders. The first phase was initiated in Vancouver in early 1985, the second phase was to expand through- out the rest of the pro- vince, To date, the second pliuse has not happened. reunited To the Editor, We wish to extend our sincere thanks to all our friends who joined us in celebrating our Golden Wedding Anniversary. Thank you all for the lovely cards, flowers and best wishes. You made us feel very special. Also a very special thanks to all our family, children and grand- children, who con- tributed so much to mak- ing this such a memorable occasion. It was through their invita- tions to a brother and three sisters in Norway, that Oscar and his brother, Ed, were reunited with a family they had not seen since coming to Canada in 1928 and 1929, respec- tively. Thank you all again and may God Bless you all. She is trying to create a great deal of public awareness by circulating a petition. She has also taken the time to contact lawyers and politicians in Ter- race, to help support her cause. “T am claiming dis- crimination on the grounds of geographical mis-location. If I were living in Vancouver, I would be on the project,” said Zavaglia. The Terrace Women’s Resource Center will be distributing the petition to other women’s centers throughout the province. Any interested citizens who want to help in the fight, are asked to con- tact the Women’s Re- source Center. Multicultural organi- zations try to help recently arrived im- migrants as well as those that have been in Canada for some time, to acquire the language, social, economic and_ political skills necessary to mak- ing a living and playing a full part as citizens in the life of the community. At the same time, multicultural groups en- courage the preservation of the newcomer’s cultural heritage so that they can maintain their cultural identity and con- tinue to take pride in their heritage. A Terrace woman, Comfort Osei-Tutu, was elected to the Board of Directors of AMSSA, B.C., at their annual meeting in Vancouver at the end of May. She will serve a two-year term on this 15 member board, contributing a northern perspective and gaining much information to stimulate ideas here. Recognition on a pro- vincial level also goes to Linda Lee, a Terrace teacher and member of the local multicultural group, for her leadership in conducting workshops on racism and stereo- types for the South Okanagan School District in early May. Using film, multicultural games and discussion, she showed the dif- ference between good _and bad teasing, the ‘ways to include, not add, multicultural aspects to the curriculum. Elemen- tary students, teachers, Board members and the Superintendent were all enthusiastic participants in the weekend. The meeting at 2 p.m. on June 7, will be follow- ed by a_ no-host barbecue.
