, the truth about Israel. _ While attending the Fifth G Assembly of the World Feder- _ ation of Democratic Youth in Prague, I obtained an inter- 3 _ view with the two delegates, ; Uzi Burstin and Ghassan + Habib, who tfepresented the | : " Israeli Communist Youth or- _ ganization. _ In their opinion, before a ‘genuine and lasting peace can be established in the Middle East, it is necessary that Is- Yael recognize the right of self- ‘determination of the Arab __ peoples. And this means sev- _ €raj, things, _ It means, first of all, that Asrael must recognize the right c of the Palestinian Arabs to re- turn to their homeland. For 11 years, 1,200,000 Palestinian a Arabs have been living in the _ most inhuman conditions in camps the other side of the dsraeli border. They were’ ex- pelled from Israel and their land taken away from them. Land, Burstin said, which to- day, 11 years later, is still un- inhabited and lying fallow. As long as Ben Gurion sticks to his “Israel will not accept any refugee or any centimetre _ change in boundary,” there _ €an be no peace in the Middle East. _ The Israeli communists _ pointed out, incidentally, that this border Ben Gurion speaks of is not the border set by the United Nations, nor have the _ two states, Arab and Jewish in j Palestine been set up as re- _ commended by the 1947 Res- _ olution of the U.N. According to the plans of Anglo-Ameri- can imperialism, only one ) state, Israel, supported and ) subservient to U.S. capital, was established. The two stat- es, Jewish and Arab were to 4 be fully independent, but to : co-operate on such questions _ as electric power, dams, air- ports, etc. Secondly, there is the quest- ion of the 200,000 Arabs who _ live in Israel today. They live under martial law. They are systematically § discriminated against in the matter of work, Of education, of housing. How, Burstin asked, could the Arab nations look upon Is- Yael as a good neighbour when -| it followed these provocative || policies? ite was very passionate Israel policies must he changed to assure peace in the middle east By MONICA SAMUELSON ; i The friction between Israel and the Arab states is given a lot of play in the _ Canadian press. When I returned to Canada and looked o World Youth Festival in our newspapers, I noticed one 1 tween Arabs and Israelis had broken out in Vienna and that knives and broken bottles _ Were used, but that no one got hurt. To my knowledge no - knives and broken bottles had ever been used, surely someone would have been hurt. This seems to be a perfect example of the way Canadian newspapers seek to distort ver the press coverage of the tem stating that a fight be- such fight ever occurred; if when he spoke about the sur- vival of Israel. Ben Gurion ac- cuses the Israeli Communists of not being patriotic because they concern themselves with the fate of the Arabs. But a genuine Israeli patriot, Bur- stin said, realizes that unless Israel discontinues ifs provoc- ative policies towards the Ar- ab states and stops being a willing tool of Anglo-French- U.S. imperialism, Israel will not survive. ; Today, 70 percent of Israel’s national budget goes for war spending. Ben Gurion’s stand is consistently linked with im- perialism’s desire to keep the Middle East in a state of ten- sion. To secure peace in the Mid- dle East and to ensure Israel’s survival. both the foreign and Bent White @ SPOR NCIENT Archie Moore who can bon the mots with the best of them, told an inquisitive reporter asking about his age: ‘I’m as old as my tongue and a little older than my teeth.” Archie (44-46-48?) is a ring veteran, all right, but a glance at the record books shows that Jem Mace, the great English bare-knuckle champion (and the first ‘‘world’ champion) fought. his last fight at the venerable age of 64. Mace was. the Englishman who really introduced boxing to Australia and America, and made it an international sport. Like Tom Sayers before him and Bob Fitzsimmons after him. Mace was really more of a middleweight than a heavy- weight; nevertheless he man- aged to lick all. the heavy- weights of his day. He fought some great bat- tles, and also a few stinkers. One of the latter took place in Canada, at Dover in 1871, when he and a fellow named Joe Coburn faced each other for 76 minutes, during which time neither landed a_ solid blow. domestic policy of Israel must be allowed to return to their homeland, and secondly, the vicious discrimination against Israeli Arabs must be ended. Today, the only party in Is- yael which recognizes the right of self-determination of the Arab people is the Communist Party. It is the only party which embraces both Jews and Arabs and is the only party to offer a genuine solution fo Israeli problems. If this great weapon of im- perialism in the middle east, the weapon of dissension be- tween Jew and Arab, in which Ben Gurion shows him- self a conscious and willing | tool, was taken away, then the middle east would be free to fight Imperialism singlemind- edly. Curiously enough, the year before, at the age of 40, Mace had won his greatest fight, against the American Tom Allen (born in England). After 44 minutes of savage battling, Allen bit the dust and was carried off by his seconds in a horse-blanket. eet Watehing the Montreal Can- adians whip the All-Stars on Tv last week, I was forced to the conclusion that the NHL race this year will be to see which team will finish in second place. The Habitants, | as powerful as ever, just can’t miss ending on top again. Of course, one shouldn't for- get what happened to the “in- vincible’ Yankees in baseball. But it seems likely that the young Maple Leafs, the Black Hawks and the Bruins will be in a ‘scramble, with Gordie Howe (oops. I mean the Red Wings) trying to get out of the cellar. Bek oe Dissension in the Lions. den pids fair to ruin what might have been a glorious season, in which the longshot underdogs could conceivably have gone all the way.
