Tozan Society News The week of May [6th is the week we take apart the hard brick muffle car kiln at Crane Canada. For those of you who don’t know about the Tozan Kiln Project, I'd just like to let you know we will be building a Japanese three chambered wood fired kiln in Nanaimo during the next vear. (See Jan, Feb, Mar. issues of the Newsletter for details.) We could sure use some help taking apart the old Crane kiln, so if you are interested please call me at 929-9]75, We also need some billeting for people coming over to help, if you have space, please let me know. There are more hard bricks available than you can imagine. If you have a personal interest in obtaining some hard brick all the more reason to participate. If you only have a day or two that you are able to donate, that’s great, we appreciate any help you are able to give, Lots of physical work to be done, but it should be fun as well. You will need to bring: a mask with purple cartridges, hard hat if you have one, leather gloves, goggles, steel toed shoes/boots if you have them, Extra sledge hammers, brick carriers and other tools would be useful as well. Don’t think that this all sounds too physical for you. Most of the work will be helping to put bricks on to the pallets for transport. Les Beardsley has lined up free transportation for the bricks to Nanaimo and has arrange for them to be stored at the Armed Forces base near Malaspina College - we just need to get them on those pallets. The pallets will be moved using a fork lift thanks to Les, and pallet jacks courtesy of Greenbam and Crane. This will make the work much easier, Crane is located at 225 North Road in Coquitlam (see map). Phone to let me know you are coming or if you want to ask me any questions. It's another exciting step to bring the Tozan kiln closer to reality. Carhi Jefferson New Westminster FPhoin: Elaine Futterman! Mike Alber eeti i Sam Uhlick gave a two day workshop at Emily Carr College in March. Here he is with President, Tam Irving, slip glazing a pitcher thrown on the first day of the workshop. Sam's quiet, sometimes humourous manner and his practical way of dealing with everything gave the 25 people attending the workshop a good sense of the focus, skill and knowledge it takes to make a living as a potter in the 1990's, Videos Available Rentals are for a 10 day period from the Powers’ Guikl of BoC.
