speedway spills wow v fans

RIVERBOAT DAYS race
fans were treated to profes-
sional and amateur excite-
ment July 31 - Aug. 1 when
Jeff Gordon’s Nascar and
the year’s second rollover
ieamed up for a litle speed-
way excitement ,

Carmen Powers lost con-
trol of her bomber ‘in the
main races and drove into
the dirt in the left hand
comer of the track,

In trying to regain her
pesition, Powers caught a
lire on the edge of gthe
track’s pavement, flifpea
over and hit the wall in front
ofa cheering crowd,

As Powers, who Ieft the
race bruised but unhurt,
skidded roof first down the
front straight, the remaining
bombers on the pavement
faced a virtual obstacle
course as they tried to slop
or avoid the collision.

To add to the excitement,
Jeff Gordon’s Nascar acted
as the weekend pace car
aficr a Wrief stint during the
Riverboat Days parade.

The car, toured across
Canada and the U.S. by 12-
year Winston Cup veteran
Bobby Wawak, also took a

five to 10 lap speedway ex-,

cursion. Needless to say the
car was the centre of atlen-
tion as faus piled into the pit
after the races to get a closer
look.

pick up a ride.

JAMIE MORAN once again donned the
champion’s crown at the weekend's Hirsch
Creck Men’s Open golf toumey.

Going into Sunday’s second round with

four potential challengers

strokes, Moraa posted a one-unider 71 to
open up a gap no one would close.

A final round of 74 Monday left him at
218, nine clear of Terrace junior Scott

Rigler.

Rigler fashioned something of a charge in
that fast round wilh a 71 — the weekend's
ouy other sub-par performance — but
scores of 77 and 79 on the first two days
had left him with an impossible targel,

The victory gave Moran his third men’s
title in four years on his home course while
Rigler settled for Low Gross in the
championship flight. Bill Fois took low net

in the flight with 214.

The battle for supremacy in the C flight
also turned out to be for the overall low net

title,

Terrace’s Jim Lynch had made up six
Strokes on Susday to tic Kitimat’s Dallas
Stevenson and opened a one-stroke lead by
the end of the fina! day’s froat nine.

But Stevenson dominated on the ran back
lo the clubhouse, eventually finishing five

clear of Lynch to take low
Hight.

Lynch got ample compensation however
— the 24 handicap golfer’s 278 gave him a
three-day net of 206, easily enough to take
the overall low net title.

In the A flight Lewis Condon’s steady
performance (81,85,83) guided him to a
hometown four siroke victory for low gross
over Buster Patterson of Terrace. Having
ouishot Condon by six on the final round;
Patterson was left to rue the 90 he had
posted on the first day. But his charge did
allow him te overhaul Paul Voyki to take
the flight’s low net,

Impressively consistent play — 85, 84, 84
-—~ was the key to Paul Duchesne’s low
gross triumph in B flight

The Kitimatian — winner of the A flight
low gross last ycar finished with a 253,
seven strokes clear of Ray Rego. Rego
seltled for low net, squeaking home by a
single stroke over Ron MacAuly.

Low net in C flight went to homer Pete
Dzuiba whe took strokes off his score each
day to post a 217 net final.

With a turnout of more than 130, includ-
ing a number of one-time residents making
a return visit to their old course, and
weather that was almost too good for those
battling the course on the heat of the day,
organizers not surprisingly declared the
eventa great success.

Streel and Keith Avenue
