Border post birthday [ makes gov't happy ONE YEAP. and change after it opened, Canada Customs officials are happy with the border post separat- ing Stewart from Hyder, Alaska. The post, called a port in Canada Customs language, was re-opened afier more than a decade of there being no checks on people traveil- ing back and forth over ihe border, And that brought on a healthy business in cigarette and alcohol and other kinds of smuggling. “Overall we're satisfied that the port is doing what it’s intended to do,”’ Canada Customs official Dan McGrath said. *‘One of the goals was to level the economic playing field in Stewart and there’s also been a_ significant reduction if not elimination of smuggling across that border,” he said. The level playing field McGrath speaks of means Stewarl merchants aren’t suftering from artificially low cigarette sales, for in- stance, The reduction in the temp- lation to smuggle alcohol Tesulis in more government revenues from sales in Stewart, McGrath said customs of- ficers checked through 175,000 people and 86,3259 vehicles in the year since the port was opened. And they made just 53 sei- zures during the period. “Our desire was to deter more than catch people,’’ said McGrath of the figure. The port is manned by five full-time officers and the one-year opening marks the halfway point of a trial petiod. Provincial liquor store revenues for the year ending March 31, which include seven months of the post being open, were $497,650, For the year before, sales were $458,179. Thai's taken as a sign the post has deterred the smug- gling of alcohol. kkk Customs officers will have more arrest and detain powers under the Criminal Code if legislation intro- duced last week in Parlia- ment is passed. Officers would most likely be involved with suspected impaired drivers or suspected cases of child ab- ductions, according to statistics released by the federal government last week. Federal officials say the new planned powers are in- tended to bridge the gap be- tween when officers detain people and when police of- ficers arrive to take over. There are no plans to have the customs officers cary firearms. Customs officers do have powers of detention and ar- rest now but these related to Customs Act offences such as smugpling. In convention THE TSIMSHIAN Tribal Council met in Prince Rupert for its annual conference last week. Two of the key players were Alex Boiton, left, and Gerald Wesley. Both are involved in land claims and both are from Kitsumkalum just outside of Terrace, With them is the talking stick, tha symbal of authority in determining who gets to speak. -PHOTO COURTESY HEATHER COLPITTS The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, November 12, 1997 - A13 Impaireds cut STEWART RCMP ieport a side benefit to the Canada Customs post between their community and Hyder, Alaska. ‘'There’s been a decline in impaired driving offences with people coming back,’’ said Constable Don Ericsen of traffic returning to Stewart from Hyder. “At the beginning (when the post opened up) tried it and got caught and it’s dropped way off.’’ There’s also been a drop in the number of automobile ac- cidents on the road between the two communities since the post opened, the constable added. He did give credit to the Sealaska bar in Hyder for intro- ducing a shuttle bus service between Hyder and Stewart.
