A8 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, May 8, 1996 _ TERRACE STANDARD Business REVIEW PERRY AZAK of Tilhkski's Transport Ltd. now runs a passenger and freight ser- vice into the Nass Valley. He bought out Bill Young's transpart business last year, New firm offers ticket to the Nass THE NEWEST transport company in the northwest is now officially on the road. Tilthksi’s Transport Ltd. is running a passenger service between the Nass Valley and Terrace. The company is owned by Perry Azak of Gitwinksihlkw in the Nass, “Tilthksi means ‘‘a little boy’? (in Nisga’a),’’ explains Azak. “It was my nickname when I was a little boy. My uncle called me that,’’ Azak got into the transport business by buying out Bill Young of Nass Camp last year. He then ran the business under Young’s licence until his own paperwork cleared official channels. “T've got a van that can carry 13 people and a bit of freight, too,'’ said Azak, The business is benefitting greatly because of the new vehicle bridge connecting Gitwinksihlkw with the south bank of the Nass River. *‘T never thought I’d see the day when I'd see a‘cab run- ning around Gitwinksihlkw,”’ said Azak. Azak doesn’t run a regular schedule — that licence is held by another Nass Valley transport company — but he does respond when called for pickups or deliveries. His van is also equipped with a radiophone so he can keep in touch as required and for people to call him. Azak said there is a large demand for passenger and transport service in the Nass Valley and is also looking to develop a business in transporting tourists. Local mill may slice veneer By JEFF NAGEL A $2.4 MILLION retooling of Forwest Wood Specialties mill would turn it into a vencer slic- ing plant, The proposal would join Forwest’s mill on Hwy 162 West at Frank St. with Triumph Veneer Manufacturing Ltd., of Vancouver. West Fraser Mills, owners of Forwest, have not yet approved the deal, but Skeena Sawmills general manager Bruce MacNicol admits it’s the best option presented for the future of For- west. The deal means more wood for both Forwest and partner Skeena Sawmilis. : Triumph has been offered a small business at Tuck Inlet near Prince Rupert. ~~~ ‘ Forwest’s existing small business licence — which isn’t enough to satisfy all the mill’s needs — funs out next year, The retooled value-added mill, which opened in 1994, would employ about the same number of workers initially, but that could increase to timber sale to cut 40,600 cubic tietres of-wood _ around 67 jobs. «. ‘We're going to be moving very quickly to a two-shift basis,” predicted Steve Holmes, presi- dent of Triumph. The project would basically be an expansion and renovation of the existing mill, which now produces window and door components. It would include construction of a flitch (cant) preparation unit, installation of two vertical guillotine slicing machines as well as a vencer dryer. Holmes said an export clipping and packing line downstream of the dryer would package the product for export. “"We will be able to prepare the vencer in the Brides and presentation required for offshore clients.”* rel vy : oe ey oS ate me * i It would make Forwesi/Triumph the only veneer plant in B.C. producing for the export market, Holmes said. “We will be moving from what they’re doing now — towards the bottom of the value-added scale — to the veneer product near the high end of the value-added scale.’” “Our products will be going primarily into Germany and Italy and Japan,’’ he said. Triumph had been exporting sliced veneer since 1993 using a plant in Kitchener, Ont. For the most part, Holmes said, vencer is pro- duced overseas, “B.C.’s hemlock, fir and spruce is being Sliced every day in the consuming markets,” he said, ‘“The veneers are being produced there out of large oversized timbers and flitches we’ve been shipping to them.”’ An export plant here would help repatriate those jobs back to B.C., he said, MacNicol said the announcement was prema- ture, adding West Fraser won't make a final de- cision for a few weeks, Last week’s government press release — issued on the day the provincial election was called — made no reference to Forwest or a retooling of that plant, and instead said the tim- ber sale would enable the company ‘‘to build a veneer slicing plant in Terrace,” Out & About City begins CRIME ai STOPPERS 635-TIPS eco-planning THE CITY has hired con- Sultants ECL Enviro West and Urban Systems to carry cut a plan to protect local environmentally sensitive areas, BUSINESS TO BUSINESS.
