Effective aid to Chile call of Quebec's unions The accompanying declara- tion was signed by a number of trade union and other organiza- tioms, meeting in Montreal, September 12, 1973. The tragic end of the Allende administration constitutes a heavy blow to the hopes that the Chilean experience aroused in the working class of Quebec. Millions of embattled working people throughout the West turned towards this Latin Ame- ricam country, as a new road to socialism. The people of Chile tried-to prove that it is possible to build a political and econo- mic order for Man, without re- course to arms. We see in this event the sub- versive aggression of the multi- national companies which are determined in all countries where they have interests to ride roughshod over national sovereignty and the democratic choice of the peoples for self- determination. American impe- rialism which has done every- thing to crush this administra- tion of which the government had been democratically elect- ed, are trying to push us to the conviction that the economic rules that it is imposing on the West rest on violence~and can only be changed by violence. The labor movement continues to reject the thesis that all liber- ation must be paid for in blood by the working people. * * * The struggle of the Chilean workers is the struggle of all the workers who want to bring about a better world in a demo- cratic and civilized way. The battle they have carried on was everyone’s battle because it was to everyone’s benefit. In the sombre hours through which our Chilean comrades are pass- ing, we have no right to remain xaak” TORONTO — A _ 500-strong audience of diverse persuasions gave resounding support to the struggle for restoration of demo- cratic government in Chile, at a meeting Sept. 15 at St. Clair Ave. Unitarian Church. The meeting gave thunderous approval to a resolution, adopt- ed earlier in the day by the Pre- siding Committee of the Cana- dian Peace Congress and read to the gathering by chairman, Ray Stewenson of the United Steel- workers: The statement read: Overwhelming Approval “This meeting of Toronto ci- tizens, called by the Canadian Peace Congress and the Toronto Association for Peace, most strongly urges all individuals, democratic organizations, and all levels of government in Can- passive spectators. We must give them active and effective aid. In the next hours our action will press: 1. The Canadian government to immediately break relations with the illegal and brutal mili- tary regime of Chile. 2. The western trade union movement and especially the North American movement to study the forms of help that are most essential to give to the trade union movement of Chile which was forced to take up arms yesterday. 3. The workers of Quebec to increase their vigilance against the subversive activities of the multinational companies and their influence on the govern- ments, thus imperilling national sovereignty. Quebec solidarity will organ- ize during the hours that follow and we count on giving it a militant character.
