The 2004-2005 school year will feature events celebrating the 25" Anniversary of francophone education in British Columbia and the FPFCB. That’s right! It’s been 25 years since the inception of the Immersion and Francophone Program (Program cadre de frangais, as it was known at the time). The program was instituted in 1979 in nine school districts, providing services to some 232 students. Throughout the years, the francophone program has continued to evolve with the opening of the first public francophone school in 1983 (Anne-Hébert), entrenchment of francophone parents’ rights in the 1987 School Act, passage of Bill 45 to create a francophone management system for the province in 1997, etc. These events reflect only a small portion of the dynamic evolution of the francophone education system, which today boasts 37 programs in 26 schools, providing services to more than 3500 students. We have every reason to celebrate! The 25th Anniversary poster and slogan were unveiled at Ecole Rose-des- vents in Vancouver on October 7. The poster design was inspired by the work of Myriam Verly, a 9-yearold at Rose-des-vents, and the slogan, “25 years...Imagine!”, was suggested by Elise Cliché, an 8- yearold from Ecole Victor Brodeur in Victoria. Both students were the happy winners of the contest organized by the FPFCB as part of the 2004 Semaine de la francophonie. There are numerous events planned during this school year to celebrate the 25th Anniversary. Parents, students, teachers, 4 administrators, and members of the ‘“Q4 community are invited to join in.
