MO nt ne ere ease OY REPORT Mev TQ: Mayor and Council DATE: March 4, 1974 FROM: Health Committee The Health Committee met on Tuesday, February 26, 1974 with the Vector Control Officer to discuss the Mosquito Control Program for 1974. The Committee can report as follows: 1. L.I.P. Project - Mosquito Access Traiis This project is under way and is, at present, employing five workers to cut access trails into some of the low lying bush area to enable ground control larviciding work to be carried out in the Spring. The Committee was advised that larviciding will be the main method of control this year due to the fact that the Provincial Government has placed a ban on aerial spraying for adulti- ciding. 2. Mosquito Control Program Mr. Guite’ advised the Committee that the Provincial Government has approved the hiring of nine students starting May 6 to work on mosquito control in the Coquit- lam-Port Coquitlam area. This will be under the Provincial Summer Employment Program and will be at no cost to the City except for chemicals and possibly equipment as noted below. The control wili be done by larviciding by ground con- trol methods. It would appear that aerial spray is still permitted for larvi- ciding and should this be necessary for any inaccessible places the Committee will follow the procedure followed last year in getting Council approval for aerial spray. Another aspect of the student's work this year will be to cenduct a survey of the Burke Mountain area to locate mosquito breeding sites and the Committee is seeking publicity on this aspect in order to encourage land owners to notify the Vector Control Officer of any water areas that might be mosquito breeding sites that can be sprayed and inventoried as trouble spots. Last year the Council approved the purchase of equipment to carry out the ground control work. This equipment which includes backpacks for spraying are available again for the use of the students. Mr. Guite has suggested the two municipalities consider the purchase of a fogging machine which would provide the penetration necessary to get into heavy bush areas. This unit costs approximately $300. and could be bought on the shared basis with Coquitlam. In addition it will be nec- essary to purchase a quantity of Flit M.L.0., the chemical use for larviciding in the amount of approximately $300.00. The municipality provided chemicals of this sort for last years program. +e 0/2
