Whoever wins the championship title ‘in Friday’s Ol? Tyme Fiddle Contest per- forms at Saturday’s opening ceremonies, says contest organizer Erle Crawford, a ‘fiddler who heads up his own band, Moonshine, and is no stranger to fiddle -contests himself, “People have always asked me, ‘What’ s the difference between a fiddle and a violin?” Crawford says. A fiddle and a violin are actually the same instrument. The difference lies in how they’re played. “(Canadian fiddle great] Frankie Ro- gers used to say, ‘The difference is, you can spill beer on a fiddle,’” Crawford . . says. “Classical music is played entirely differently.” '-"-Qld time fiddle music refers to old time country, a rawer, more authentic sound like the kind played by the big stars of the “50s and 60s, - “An old time country song has ta have mothers, boozing, trains and broken hearts. If it doesn’t have anything like that init, it’s not old time country.” “Contestants ‘sign up at the ‘event, so there’s no way to tell who will enter until There are four categories: junior (that’s age 12 and under), intermediate (12 years and older), seniors (60 plus) and an open category. The winners from these four categories are entered in the championship round. The last fiddler standing takes home the title and $1,000 in prize money, It all takes place Friday, Aug. 30 at the Evangelical Free Church in Terrace, at 4640 Park Ave., starting at 10 a.m. with the junior division. Admission is $5. The Bulkley Valley Old Time Fiddlers and Erle Crawford and Moonshine will entertain the crowd in between categor- ies, Live music also takes centre stage at both Saturday and Sunday at the fair. The list of confirmed performers in- cludes traditional country band Erle Crawford and Moonshine; bluegrass, go- spel and folk band Copper Mountain; Borderline Country with Wayne Robin- son; Moonlight and Rosie, who play mod- ern country; Whats’isname and the Other Fellas play ‘50s and ‘60s Rock ‘n Rall; and CRC play country rock. The band splay both days.
