Twenty years ago, we didn’t know half of what we know now about space, diseases, “nutrition. We now know that too much cholesterol is bad, our rainforests are disappearing due. to holes in the ozone, and people who have pets live longer. We've been told fiber is good, exercise is good, and ultraviolet rays are bad. Don’t you ever wonder what they'll tell us next? For the past few years, health-conscious folks have been eating oatmeal and whole wheat - bread, scoming white sugar and: flour, and focusing on natural fibers. We’ve heard that whole grains are healthy and caramel is not, Then the food industry got into a silent war, with so-called "bad" food fighting back against this nutritional research. Popcorn is good, they said, it’s full of fiber. Tortilla chips are made from stone- ground com meal, a wholesome snack. "Beef is lean", said the beef people. The white sugar industry put “out ads, proclaiming the value of sugar, "only 16 calories What the Food Guide won't tell you.. a teaspoon", and its natural goodness, The butter people have pushed aside any cholesterol - propoganda, and focus on its natural daity ‘flavor, Now I’m to get their scientists and advertising people to announce the nutritional value of a Snickers bar. Think about this — there’s peanuts, a good source of protein, there’s lecithin in the milk chocolate and according to my research, it contains eight percent of the government’s recommended daily allowance of protein. Why aren’t they publicizing the fact that only 12 Snickers bars could provide your daily dose of protein? A Hostess Twinkie contains four percent of the RDA of riboflavin, and two percent of the niacin you should have. Gee, you might be getting low in the niacin, better have a Twinkie, eh? Even Oreo’s have four percent of the RDA of iron. Have them with waiting for the junk food industry a handful of Frito’s corn chips, (two percent of the RDA’s calcium) and you're on your way to a healthy lifestyle. | It’s not easy to change one’s cating habits. First, you sprinkle a little oat bran on your Captain Crunch. The next thing you know, you’re eating Cheerios without sugar. Suddenly, there's Super Fiberous Whole-Bran Jute Squares in your cereal bowl, and you think you've finally reached health-food nirvana, until you spy a box of Hostess Ding Dongs on the grocery shelf. They cali out to you, dripping with sweet smooth chocolate, soft deep moist + cake, and creamy icing center, drawing you closer until you are hypnotized by those Hostess words "wholesome" and "fresh". Your hand trembles as you reach out for the package. You feel as if you’ve lost some inner battle, but don’t despair. A Ding Dong contains two percent of the RDA for calcium. Only 50 Ding Dongs and you’re all set for healthy bones and teeth. Food trends move in cycles. Someday, maybe far into the future, scientists and advertisers will come up with a healthy reason to live on Fritos and Coke. And I'll be able to say that I knew it all along. Unfortunately, no matter how deeply you research it, there are absolutely no nutrients in lifesaver's candy or lime Jello. But what the heck, a person’s got to cat some things just for fun, right?
