Volunteers needed TERRACE — The Terrace group of the B.C. Special. Olympics organization needs volunteers. Over the past year, the mentally handicapped athletes participated in bowling, soccer and swim- ming. The Terrace group would like to continue these activities, but desperately need more volunteers. People are needed: @ for bowling — coaching the athletes and score keeping; : @ for swimming — lifeguarding and one on one in- struction in water; . . _ @ a secretary for meetings; @ a fund raising committee; ® and general assistance. ; If you would like to get involved in Special Olym pics in the Terrace area, attend the fall meeting on Monday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. in the Terrace Arena co- ordinator’s office. — A dangerous QaMe continued from page 4 looking into it. What does that mean? Will he leave unions alone or will he wage war on them? Will he bring in legisla- tion disbanding unions in businesses with fewer than 100, 50, 20 or 10 people? ; And what happens if a larger company tries to get rid of the union by splitting into a number of smaller ones, each of which has few enough employees to be exempted from union organizing? Good point. We'll look into that. Not good enough, Mr. Vander Zalm. Not good enough by a long shot. Ask Lillian to put down the accordion for a moment, stop smiling and tell us, please, how you will bring us the prosperity you pro- mise. Shaky start for Skelly continued from page 4 As the campaign unfolds, the issues will come to the fore. The major battles will undoubtedly be fought over economic strategy and job creation. But there will be secondary issues. Asked whether he plans to make his stand on abor- tion (against) an election issue, Vander Zalm said he didn’t but added that his opponents might. Skelly confirmed Vander Zalm’s suspicions, saying the premier had already made it an issue by saying his government would look into the matter. Another likely issue to surface during the campaign will be the minimum wage, the lowest in Canada at $3.65 an hour. — Nor will the NDP let the Socreds forget the past. They will hammer away at former premier Bill Ben- nett’s restraint program. They will bring up the firing of public servants, the slashing of programs and dismantling of agencies, such as the Rentalsman’s office and the Human Rights Commission, following the jast election. And Vander Zalm’s promise to end partisan strife notwithstanding, the campaign will not be without mud-slinging. Some of the candidates on either side may not want to go along with the premier’s call fora conciliatory approach to politics. I will forego the temptation at this point of making a prediction regarding the outcome. Until Oct. 22, enjoy the spectacle of what is the finest manifestation of democracy — free elections by free people. SS eee ei at maiepaetk aaah a hare
