Bulletin No. 4 The first La Féte Colombienne des Enfants is now a wonderful memory for the 15,000 students and adults from across 8.C. who attended the festival. Even the weather cooperated as nine headlining artists offered forty performances to our guests. The site was also enlivened by eight daily open stage performances and by five daily strolling performances. Over 230 French speaking student volunteers, wearing La Féte's official costume (created with the help of Dr. Denton) greeted approximately 3,000 of their peers each day. The students were able to participate in many interesting activities including flag making, hands on Apple computers, creating their own animated cartoons, and meeting a Mountie in red serge. Students were integrated as radia personalities, taped on site for broadcast later in the same day an Radio Canada. Students alsa represented France and Belgium. The class representing France were made honourary French citizens for the five days and performed an original play, wearing costumes evoking the French Revolution and helping to celebrate its 200th anniversary. Both classes shared their knowledge of these countries with the guests who attended La Féte. Extremely popular at La Féte were the samples of food with a French accent given away by the corporate sponsors. By week's end, Overwaitea handed out 14,000 of their specially made tourtiéres, Dairyland distributed over 19,000 samples of cheese and 24,000 samples af yoghurt. When the students picked up their lunches, SunRype offered aver 15,000 juice containers. Venice Bakery baked 13,000 baguettes on the site. Anather popular itern was the panda poster distributed by Radio-Canada-- 23,000 copies were given to the quests. La Féte was particularly proud to greet some special guests during our Opening Ceremonies. The official opening was conducted by our President, Gerald Tibbits, and the Hon. Bill Reid, Minister of Tourism and Provincial Secretary. Guest speakers included Benno Friesen, MP., the Hon. Rita Johnston, Minister of Municipal Affairs, and His Worship, Bob Bose, Mayor of Surrey. Honoured quests included Penny Priddy, Chairperson of the Surrey School Board; Rerté Delille, Consul] General of France; Michel Gardille, Cultural Attaché; aand Miche) Delfosse, Consul General of Belgium. Nicole Boudreau of the Sociéte St. Jean Baptiste of Montreal; André Le Blanc of Montreal's Le Devair, (both courtesy of Canadian Airlines); David Dandeneau, Winnipeg's official Yoyageur; and Thérése St.-Onge, Senior Project Manager of Ottawa's Winterlude were some of the out-of-town notables. Representing the Secretary of State were Stewart Goodings and Robin Boys of Ottawa. Several Surrey Aldermen and members of the School Board also joined us. Teachers, parents, and students from acrass the while province were delighted and surprised to have lived such a beautiful experience. They al] promised to return to next year’s Fete.
