Once again, we come to the end of another school year. It’s a time when some people stretch out in the sun of an ever-lengthening day, and some head off to the driving range to work on their golf swings. It’s also time for the pre-vacation issue of Info-Parents. Here, then are a few hastily scribbled thoughts on the past academic year. In May, | had an opportunity to attend the Pionniers School inaugural cer- emony in Maillardville. Ah, yes! After many years of effort, the Coquitlam Francophone community finally has its own school. The program, which started with 14 students in grades 1 through 7, now has an enrolment of more than 225 from Kindergarten DOES YOUR CHILD ATTEND A FRANCOPHONE SCHOOL? through Grade 11. The growth of this program is a tribute to the parents who worked so hard to ensure its success. During the ceremony, | thought back on the obstacles, challenges, and frus- trations that these people had faced during their 15-year quest for an inde- pendent French-language school. | also thought about the parents in Kamloops, who are in the early stages of creating a French-language school for their community. In fact, in Kamloops there are now enough stu- dents to warrant a Francophone School Board petition to the Ministry of Education for anew school. The par- ents’ efforts have finally paid off, and we all rejoice in their success. Finally, | thought about all of you, Brit- ish Columbia parents. Thanks to your Would you like to improve your French? Would you like to participate more in your child’s education in French? The Francisation Framiliale program is for you! Through a series of workshops, you will be given the opportunity to improve your linguistic and cultural knowledge. The workshops focus on improving communication skills, taking the child’s curriculum as a starting point. Some comments from parents who attended the Spring 2000 workshops: “/ think it's an excellent programme. It enables the anglophone parents fo become involved in the children’s education. Also shows the children that the parents are studying and are also learning a new language”, “The course was very beneficial. Not only did it allow us to learn and practise our skills but also allowed us the opportunity to communicate with other parents. Thank you.” The next session will start at the end of October anywhere in the province where there is a small group of interested parents. If you are interested, please contact Héléne Sahler Lee at Educacentre (604-708-5100 or 1-800-747-4825). TIRE LIRE SUMMER CLOSING Please note that the Resource Centre will be closed for the summer from June 28 until Sep- ‘tember 5, 2001. We thank you for your interest and involve- ment in Tire Lire and hope you have a wonderful summer. See you soon! commitment, courage, tenacity, and dedicated work, our children can en- joy a French-language education sys- tem across the province. Commit- ment, tenacity, courage, dedicated work, determination...these adjec- tives apply to all of the parents, past and present. Over the years, you have had to meet many challenges and overcome them through commitment and determina- tion. | am confident that you will con- front the challenges of the future in the same way. To succeed, we must establish a partnership that includes all of the key players—students, par- ents, teachers, school administrators, support staff, the Francophone School Board, and the community.
