THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF PORT COQUITLAM y MAR 1 6 1987 MEMORANDUM TO: City Administrator March 10, 1987 FROM: City Engineer SUBJECT: Directional Signs to Downtown ~ Public Works Committee - March 3, 1987 Recommendation: That the City install five new directional signs and replace two existing directiona| Signs which are too small at locations shown on the attached sketch with the estimated cost of $1,000.00 to come from the unallocated funds in the Public Works Capital Budget; and that the Department of Highways be requested to fnstall two Signs on the Mary Hil] Bypass at the locations shown. Background and Comments: The Public Works Committee, acting on a request from the Merchantts Association, has reviewed all the existing directional signs in the City and prepared a plan showing the directional signs required to provide proper information to drivers about the location of the downtown and the Library and Wilson Center. The sketch shows the major routes used by traffic in accessing the City. 'f signs can be installed on al! these routes, then we will catch al] those who need to know where these facilities are. As you can see from the sketch, the Lougheed Highway on both sides of the City has existing signs directing traffic to the City center. The Mary Hill Bypass itself does not have directional! signs but even this route is covered with signs directing traffic to Port Coquitlam before it gets onto the Bypass. Nevertheless, the Committee fecommends that the Department of Highways be requested to install two signs, one west of Mary Hil! Road for east bound traffic and one east of Kingsway for west bound traffic. New signs are required on Kingsway west of Maple Drive for east bound traffic, on Mary Hil! Road south of Pitt River Road for north bound traffic, on Pitt River Road east of Shaughnessy Street for west bound traffic, and existing signs which are too small should be replaced on Pitt River Road west of Shaughnessy Street for east bound traffic and on Kingsway south of Wilson Avenue for north bound traffic. All of the above signs would direct traffic to the City center. ~|- 42
