page 2 Now is che winter of my discontent. Couldn't resise char, as ic is the day after labour day, the sun has vanished and winter has swepc in wich rain and hail. Most of the cars [ saw on my way down to the guild office were indeed looking very discontence. For once, | had the foresight to bring my big umbrella. Often, if ic is only drizcling lightly when [ leave the house, | somehow convince myself chat ic will clear up and so why bacther bringing an umbrella with me? This is che same logic chac operates when | am dressed for a night our, bur fee! chat] can actach a handle to a mug without getting dirty! ! have long been interested in clay houses, and was quite pleased with the article on cob houses in this weeks’ Courier. [do always wonder how they hold up in the rain, bue] assume chat there must be ways to alleviate chia chat do not involve large amounc of liquid plastic. They originate in Wales, which isn't exactly famous for i's balmy climes. l love the idea of a house that is buildable by anyone, rather than some nightmare construction of cheap plywood with stucco slapped over ir (the standard conde being built in my meighbourheed). Deadlines have always been a motivator for me, and I've usually managed to pull it all together, even if i¢ means going withour sleep for 44 hours, Buc my last cwo clay deadlines have noc been met! This is a bad thing (as che evil side of Martha Stuart would say), | chink | may have run out of my dharmic supply of deadline grace. I’ve used it with increasingly reckless abandon the last few years. Sortof like the three wishes from the magic fish thing... And we all know chat clay isn't a material chac lends itself all chac gracefully to the last minute endeavour. lam in a state of disbelief chac ic is time to start gecting ready for Christmas sales and [I've already got a few commissions by well organized patrons, I volunteered in the Gallery a couple of days this summer and sold pots co people who were really and cruly doing cheir Chrisemas shopping «six months in advance! I'm not sure whether co admire them or co conclude that they just don'c have enough to occupy themselves with, Linda Dohezty lent me a book of poetry called ‘Mudwoman”, it’s by a native potter and is inspiring.
