4 Terrace Review —— Wednesday, August 21,1991 Tsimshian tribal council opposed to mill location A spokesman for the Tsimshian Tribal Council has expressed fears that the proposed Orenda pulp and paper project will upset the eco- logical balance of the Lakelse Lake and Kitimat River areas if it is allowed to go ahead. Art Sterrit said he believes Orenda’s zero-effluent claim for the mill is "baloney", but added that even if the pollution levels from the plant are minimal. the tribal council thinks the valley couldn’t take it. Sterrit said the Kitimat River is “just coming back into it’s own" after years of environmental prob- lems. He said the tribal council is concerned about air pollution from the proposed mill and the leaching of solid waste effluent into water. Adding even a small amount of pollutants to emission-laden air already blowing up from industrial operations in Kitimat could have a drastic effect, Sterrit said. "We already have Eurocan, the area is already polluted, and more could knock out the forest industry. . These are major concems." The site proposed by Orenda, a few kilometres south of Lakelse Girl Guides TALL TOTEM DIVISION Contact: Kathy Davies 638-1245 Marg Cooper 638-0609 Lake, is definitely within Tsim- shian territory, Sterrit said. The Kitsumkalum, Kitselas and Lax Kw’alaams bands have land in the area and could be affected, “depending on which way the effluent goes", he said. Sterrit expressed disappointment with the format of public informa- tion meetings held by Orenda at Lakelse Lake and in Terrace and Kitimat over the past month. He said the Tsimshian are definitely opposed to the project and want a process that allows for public review. He believes the tribal council should be allocated funding for intervenor Status. The group has reviewed material prepared by the Nisga’a Tribal Council in response to Orenda’s original proposal to build the mill in their comprehensive claim area south of Meziadin. Sterrit said of the impact projected in the Nisga’a research, "You could probably quadruple that effect here. It’s too sensitive an area for a project like this. "The main problem is - that they're going to try to shove it down our throats,” he said. “It's a of Canada Guides du Canada SUMMER FABRIC SALE FRIDAY AUGUST 23 & SATURDAY AUGUST 24 PICK FROM THE COLOUR CODED SPECIALS : YELLOW TAG 20% OFF GREEN TAG 30% OFF RED TAG 50% OFF SPECIAL OFFER 8=«.—C$sdéE &) Husqvarna MODEL 1090 PROGRAMMABLE Key Cabinet committee in Terrace tomorrow — There will be a few Victoria dignitaries in the area tomorrow, but unless you've already booked an appointment it’s unlikely you will see any of them. Premier Rita Johnston will spend most of the day in Kitimat meeting with Alcan, Ocelot and Burocan and then travel to Terrace for dinner with the Skeena Social Credit Constituency Association before heading back south. Skeena MLA Dave Parker says Johnston will be talking to Alcan about their joint venture with Vanderhoof Pulp and Paper, a project that would require power from the presently stalled Kemano Completion Project. With Eurocan, she will discuss a recently completed mill expansion project, fibre supply and the forest industry in general. And then Johnston will be taking a look at the Ocelot expansion as well. In Terrace tomorrow, five members of the 11- member Cabinet Committee on Sustainable | Development (CCSD) will be meeting behind closed doors with a number of groups, and individuals. Parker says the CCSD has been making regular provincial tours since 1986, and with the economic development activity in our area this year, tomorrow's stop in Terrace this year is long overdue. According to Parker, the committee will meet with representatives of the City of Terrace, the District of Kitimat, the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine, the Northwest Loggers Associ- ation, Skeena Sawmills and others Thursday _ moming. Following these meetings, ccsD members present will make recommendations which will be passed on to Victoria. In the afternoon, individual ministers are booked for private meetings with a number of groups and individuals, and the two CCSD co- chairmen — Minister of Environment Dave Mercier and Minister of Development, Trade and Tourism Howard Dirks — will fly by chartered helicopter over Lakelse Lake, Mount Layton Hot Springs, the Dubose Industrial Site and the Kiti- mat industrial area including the site of the proposed port. Other CCSD members in Terrace for Thursday’s meetings are Minister of Forests . Claude Richmond, Minister of Municipal Affaits, Recreation and Culture Graham Bruce, and Minister of Lands and Parks Dave Parker. cookie for the people of Terrace, but history hasn't proven that these projects benefit native people."
