~B Terrace Review — Wednesday, Novembe _ Soccer crown | to Kermodes - The Kitimat Rowdies grasp on 7 the Northwest zone senior boys’ _ high school soccer title was broken Saturday when Terrace Caledonia Kermodes used a hometown atmosphere to run up a 4-0 sudden-death champion- ' ship score. Rowdies, who won the zone crown with relative ease in the past few years, had been touted to do it again despite the fact- that they forfeited the right to host the finals due to poor field conditions at Kitimat. -. Originally, five teams were ex- pécted to compete. . _Prince Rupert was the first team dropping out due to dis- ‘ciplinary problems. Next it was Houston deciding discretion was ‘the better part of valor in view of several lopsided losses. _. Organizers were then set for a 7 three-team, round-robin series with the competitive Nisga’a squad filling out the roster. ‘However, Nisga’ a players were. amongst the missing when -it came time to. play their-opening game against Kitimat Saturday 7 morning. So that left. Tetrace and Kitimat to clash for 90 minutes to decide which team got. the right to travel to Burnaby, B.C. finals November .16 to 18.. As for the game, Kermodes grabbed a 1-0 lead by the half, then added three unanswered. goals in the second half to clinch the victory. Rick Dhami set the pace with ~. a pair of markers. The other goals were scored by Ray Praught and Paul Manhas. As the win was somewhat unexpected, the team will prob- ably be seeking financial support for their trip. Any individuals or businesses willing to help the boys should contact coach Mike Brady at 638-1884. ‘Lots of road work for Cal hoopsters Terrace Caledonia senior . boys’ and girls’ Kermode ‘basketball teams will be mostly on the road this season. as cost factors and out-of-town ‘snob- -bery’ (for lack of a better word) continue to keep other B.C. teams from accepting invitations ~ to play in Terrace. - The boys managed to lure | North Delta Huskies here for a two-game set in early February. That’s the only out-of-North- west zone squad slated from ac- tion here. As for the girls, they have South Delta Sun Devils coming here for a pair of games one week after the boys’ series with North Delta. That’s the girls’ home biggy of the season. On the other side of the coin, both teams hit the road quite often. Kermode boys have trips to: Salmon -Arm; -Nanaimo, Ketchikan, Vancouver's Britan- nia and the Fraser Valley’s M.E.I. The girls will be busy travel- ling to Vanderhoof, Ketchikan (also here for a pair), Prince George, Delta and Langley. — The girls open their season November 24 and 25 at the Vanderhoof Vi-Queen tourna- ment. The boys hit the road that same week, playing. at Vanderhoof on the 22nd, Williams Lake on the 23rd, Kamloops on the 23rd, and the Salmon Arm Golds tournament on the 24th to 25th. Complete schedules for both teams can be found in this week’s Scoreboard. ‘Wrestlers get new coach ~The highly successful Smithers’ wrestling club has a new coach starting this season, and they’ve lost most of their best high school athletes through graduation.
